Sword donation recalls Marine Corps Legacy

Lakota holds a Marine Corps legacy. During the late 1950s and early 1960s, Lakota saw a large number of its young men join the U.S. Marine Corps. 

“It was the snowball effect,” said Marine Corps veteran, Garry Spear. 

Two Marines from Elmore, Minn. were on leave and promised a week extension if they found other men to enlist. Soon five joined and then six more and the rest was history, stated Spear one of the original six men to enlist. 

Bringing talents to the green screen

LUVERNE — Sixth-grade students are using a green screen to add some excitement to learning about Social Studies at the LuVerne Community School District.

‘Achin for Bacon’ delivers as promised

ALGONA — Two weeks ago Algona Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassador Rodney Davis admitted that he was a little nervous because ticket sales for the first-ever ‘Achin for Bacon’ event were slow. 
The People’s Choice winner for the evening was Johnny’s from Wesley. Johnny’s provided chicken wings and legs wrapped in bacon. Kristy Riggert and Yane Nielsen Elbert were serving the chicken wings and legs.

Ben and Kayla (Reding) Schumacher of Nashville, Tenn., are the proud parents of a baby boy, Cooper Joseph, born Saturday, Jan. 7. He weighed 6 pounds 14 ounces and was 18 inches long at birth. Major snowstorm socks county

A snowstorm swept through Kossuth County on Tuesday, Jan. 24 and Wednesday, Jan. 25, blanketing the county in 11.5 inches of snow. 
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, the snowfall began around mid-afternoon on Tuesday producing the largest amounts of snowfall before early morning. After a brief respite, the snow began to fall again on Wednesday morning. 

Firefighters’ careers end after 35 years

ALGONA — Two 35-year firefighters grew up watching firefighters rush to the fire station near their homes in downtown Algona. That interest propelled them into a career of firefighting that ended in December.
Ed Wolf and John Zittritsch both received plaques after 35 years of service with the Algona Fire Department.
Zittritsch said it was hard to leave.

WB-M schools $10,000 richer

WEST BEND — A $10,000 check has been sent to the West Bend-Mallard School District through the Campbell’s Soup Labels program.
“We’re tickled to death that this landed in our laps,” said West Bend-Mallard Elementary School Principal Brian Rodemeyer. “It was an unexpected windfall for our school. It is going to help and benefit our kids for this year and next year.”

Ellefson stirs the hearts of many people

The date, Feb. 19, 1994 is forever engrained in Paula Ellefson’s mind.  It is the date when her baby girl, Samantha Joy died after Ellefson had an abortion. She was 18 years old.
Ellefson shared her story at the Rally for Life on Sunday Jan. 22. Over 90 people were in attendance. 
“It is something you will never forget, no matter how hard you try.”

Tasting that special chili

WHITTEMORE — Chili lovers were on hand to taste various types of chili at the 17th Annual Chili Cook-Off on Saturday, Jan. 21, at St. Michael’s Parish Center.
Not only is the chili cook off a fundraiser for the Whittemore Betterment  Club, it is also a social outing for those who attend, said Linda Farrell, of the Whittemore Betterment Club. “This is a renewal of friendships and something to look forward to,” Farrell said.
