West Bend-Mallard girls’ golf open season on the road

NEWELL—The West Bend-Mallard Wolverine girls’ golf squad began the 2022 season with a Twin Lakes Conference quadrangular meet on Monday, April 11.

Newell-Fonda won the league meet with a team score of 196 with Pocahontas Area taking second with a 212 as Sioux Central finished in third place with a 249 and West Bend-Mallard ended up in fourth place with a team total of 288.

Wolverine boys fall in league opener

SIOUX RAPIDS—The West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys’ golf team fell in their Twin Lakes Conference opening golf meet on Monday, April 11.

Pocahontas Area placed first with a team total of 163 followed by Newell-Fonda with a 174, Sioux Central took third with a 212 and the Wolverines were fourth with a team score of 236.

Algona girls’ golf squad drops opener

ESTHERVILLE—The Algona Bulldog girls’ golf squad dropped their 2022 season opener on Monday, April 11 in a non-conference meet at the Estherville Golf and Country Club.

Spirit Lake won the non-conference triangular with a team score of 211 as Algona came in the clubhouse in second place with a team total of 244 and Estherville-Lincoln Central finished in third place with a 257.

Trapshoot teams open 2022 season

ALGONA—The Algona and Bishop Garrigan High School trapshooting teams opened the 2022 season on Saturday, April 2 by hosting a home meet at the Izaak Walton League.

The season opener drew a total of seven schools and clubs, including the Emmet County Clay Busters, the Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire Bulls Eyes, the Humboldt Wildcats, the Pocahontas Shooting Club and Sibley-Ocheyedan.

With the snow gone, racing can’t be far away

ALGONA—With the last piles of snow gone and temperatures slowly rising, Thursday night dirt racing at the Kossuth County Speedway cannot be far away.

The plan right now is for a test and tune evening on Thursday, April 28 for the drivers that would like to test their cars with the 2022 season opener slated for Thursday, May 5.

WB-M place third in season opener

BRITT—The West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys’ track team won a pair of events and placed third in the team standings with 104 points at the Bob Sanger Relays on Monday, April 4.

The purple-and-gold won a pair of events as Collin Montag took the 800-meter run in 2:08.59 along with the 4 x 800-meter relay quartet of Joe Mader, Lucas Fehr, Landon Montag and Collin Montag with a time of 9:10.17.

Wolverine girls win four events at Britt

BRITT—The West Bend-Mallard Wolverine girls’ track squad had an impressive season opener on Monday, April 4 at the Bob Sanger Relays.

The purple-and-gold won four events during the evening and scored a total of 82 team points to finish in fourth place in the team standings.

The individual winners for the Wolverines were Kierstin Montag in the 800-meter run in 2:40.25 and Shaylee Wise in the 400-meter hurdles with a clocking of 1:18.55.

Defending state champs win opener

LIVERMORE—The two-time defending Class 1A state champion Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear girls’ golf squad opened the 2022 season with a pair of wins on Monday, April 4 at Spring Valley Golf Course. 

The black-and-gold had a team total of 186 as the Humboldt Wildcats were second with a score of 203 and the Spencer Tigers were third with a 217.

Golden Bear boys drop season opener

HUMBOLDT—The Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear boys’ golf team dropped their season opener on Monday, April 4 in a non-conference match played at the Humboldt Country Club.

Spencer won the meet with a nice team score of 154 as Humboldt was next with a team total of 169 and the black-and-gold was third with a score of 191.

Andrew Hough of Spencer was the meet medalist with an even par 36 while teammate Trever Cooke took home the runner-up medal with his nine-hole score of 38.

Danyal Fothgergill

NU BBB

Fothergill stepped into the North Union lineup and put together a good season. The sophomore was second on the team in both assists with 41 and steals with 30. He scored 134 points in 21 games for an average of 6.38 points per contest on 50 of 138 overall field goal shooting. Danyal hit six of 42 treys, made 28 of 61 free throws, pulled down 77 boards and blocked one shot.

KOSSUTH COUNTY—The 25th edition of the Kossuth County Advance Girls All-Area Basketball Team is highlighted by youth and talent. Eight of the 13 named to the two squads will back in 2022-2023 for their teams.

Nielsen wins high jump at BV Elite Meet

STORM LAKE—North Union senior Sam Nielsen won the high jump while one Warrior teammate along with two Bishop Garrigan athletes earned silver medals on Saturday, March 19 at the Buena Vista Elite Girls’ Track Meet.

Nielsen glided over the bar at a wining height of 5’ 3” to take the high jump as teammate Olivia Merrill was the runner-up in the shot put with a best toss of 33’ 5”.

Area boys earn silver medals at Storm Lake

HUMBOLDT—A quartet of four Algona freshmen teamed up to win the 4 x 800-meter relay to highlight the performances of the red-and-black girls’ track team on Friday, March 18 at the Nielsen Family High School Track Meet.

The Bulldog foursome of Malyn Davis, Kaitlyn Burns, Lauren McLaughlin and Andi Jensen won the 4 x 800-meter relay with their winning clocking of 11:46.97.

Goche, Montag, Manske all-area again

KOSSUTH COUNTY—Garrett Goche of Algona and Collin Montag of West Bend-Mallard both return to the 25th annual Kossuth County Advance boys basketball first team while Algona’s Tyler Manske moves up from the second unit to the first team this year.

The talented trio is joined by Andrew Fogarty of Bishop Garrigan along with North Union teammates Kyan Jones and Lofstrom.
