ALGONA—With the final frost gone after this weekend’s precipitation, it will not be long before the roar of Thursday night thunder with be back at the Thunderdome at the Kossuth County Speedway.

“We had a good 2023 season,” said track manager Ron Reefer. “Our car count was down a little bit and our crowds were pretty solid and consistent.

2024 AHS Wall of Fame inductees named

ALGONA—The Algona High School Wall of Fame Committee is pleased to announce the 2024 class of the Wall of Fame.

This year, three individuals and one team will be recognized as the newest members of the Wall of Fame during an induction ceremony on Sept. 13 prior to the first home football game.

Our hope is to not only honor the past but to inspire our current student-athletes to strive to be part of the rich tradition and history of Algona High School.

 

Bulldog boys set three meet records at Clear Lake

CLEAR LAKE—Algona won three events and set meet records in all three events to highlight the performances of the red-and-black boys’ track team at the Northwest Iowa Championships held on Friday, March 22.

AHS girls set meet record in 4 x 800 relay

CLEAR LAKE—A new meet record performance by the 4 x 800-meter relay team highlighted the night’s showing for the Algona Bulldog girls’ track squad at the North Iowa Girls Indoor Championships on Thursday, March 21.

The 4 x 800-meter relay crossed the finish line first with a new meet record time of 10:21.12. The quartet that ran that race was Andi Jensen, Charli Dodds, Malyn Davis and Macy Knapp.

Rasch places third in shot put on Saturday

BROOKINGS—Colin Rasch finished in third place in the shot put to highlight the performances of five North Union boys’ tracksters at the Ruth Marske Invitational held on Saturday, March 23.

Rasch tossed the steel ball 52’ 5¼” to capture third place in the event as the green-black-and-silver finished in 19th place with a team total of six points during the day.

NU girls compete at Brookings indoor

BROOKINGS—A total of eight North Union girls’ track members competed on Saturday, March 23 at the Ruth Marske Invitational indoor meet on the campus of South Dakota State University.

The green-black-and-silver did not score any points in the meet and the top place winner was senior Olivia Merrill in the shot put with a ninth place throw of 35’ 7¾”.

Two three-time choices highlight girls’ all-area team

The 27th edition of the Kossuth County Advance Girls’ All-Area basketball squad is highlighted by a pair of three-time returnees and two more that are on the team for the second consecutive season.

Abbie Capesius of Bishop Garrigan and Naomi Jones of North Union are back for the third time while Lauren McLaughlin of Algona and West Bend-Mallard’s Kierstin Montag, who also made the squad in 2022.

Winkel named ICCAC Player of Year

Former Bishop Garrigan and DMACC center Angelo Winkel was selected as the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference player of the year and was chosen to the first-team all-conference squad.

Winkel led the Bears in scoring and rebounding this season with 519 points and 241 rebounds as the squad won the conference title with a 16-2 record and 28-4 overall this season.

Rasch wins shot put event at BV Elite Meet

STORM LAKE—Colin Rasch of North Union won the shot to highlight the performances of both the North Union Warriors and West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys’ track team at the Buena Vista meet held on Saturday, March 16.

Rasch tossed the steel ball 47’ 4¾” to top the field while teammates Gavyn Morphew in the 1,600-meter run and Greyson Colegrove in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.47 both ended up in third place.

Area girls win three events at Humboldt Indoor meet

HUMBOLDT—A pair of Bishop Garrigan girls and the Algona 4 x 800-meter relay unit captured first place at the Nielsen Family High School Girls’ Invitational on Thursday, March 14 to highlight the performances of the Bulldog and Golden Bear girls’ track squads at the event.

The gold medal winners for Bishop Garrigan were Reagan Murphy in the 60-meter hurdles in 10.57 and Abbie Capesius in the 200-meter dash with her time of 28.68.

Wolverine girls win two events at Storm Lake

STORM LAKE—West Bend-Mallard had another good showing on Saturday, March 16 as the purple-and-gold girls’ track squad won a pair of events to highlight the performances of the Wolverines and the North Union Warriors squads.

Tyra Schupbach won the 1,600-meter run in 5:10.29 while the 4 x 800-meter relay group of Abi Schmidt, Allie Fehr, Addie Montag and Kierstin Montag crossed the finish line first in 10:58.04.

Bulldog boys take three events at Humboldt Indoor

HUMBOLDT—Algona won two individual events  and one relay to highlight the performances of both the Algona Bulldogs and Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear boys’ track meet at the Nielsen Family Invitational held here on Friday, March 15.

Matt Nevitt won the shot put with a heave of 53’ 0” while teammate Gavin Weber took the 800-meter run with a clocking of 2:07.15.

Algona boys track team places 5th in state indoor meet

AMES—A nice showing by the Algona Bulldog boys’ track team resulted in a fifth place showing in the team standings at the Class 3A state indoor meet held on Thursday, March 7 on the campus of Iowa State University.

The red-and-black earned a total of 38 points during the meet as ADM ran away with the team title with 79 points as Pella was second with 47, Solon had 46 and Clear Creek Amana was fourth with 45 points.

Audi Crooks unanimous first-team All-Big 12 selection

AMES—Last Saturday former Bishop Garrigan star Audi Crooks received the Jack North Award as the most outstanding player in the 2023 state basketball tournament.

On Tuesday, Crooks received a much bigger honor as the Iowa State Cyclone post player was chosen to the first-team All-Big 12 squad as an unanimous selection and was also picked to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team.

Wolverine girls place second at 1A state indoor meet

AMES—West Bend-Mallard had a great showing in their season opener at the Class 1A girls’ state indoor meet that took place on Friday. March 8 at Iowa State.

The purple-and-gold compiled a team total of 31 points to finish in second place in the team standings and Bishop Garrigan had one athlete compete and scored four points to place 33rd.

Officials Hall of Fame

Algona’s Rich Collison was inducted into the IHSAA Officials Hall of Fame on Friday night at halftime of the Class 3A championship game. Rich is pictured with his award along with his wife Julie, son Brady and his wife Cassie.
