Harold Peter, age 98 of Algona, passed away on Sunday, March 12, 2023, three weeks to the date before his 99th birthday at Kossuth Regional Health Center is Algona. Graveside Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, July 29 at 11 a.m. at East Lawn Cemetery in Algona. Military Honors will be conducted by the Algona America Legion Hagg-Turner Post #90 and The Howard D. Omdahl Algona VFW Post #2541. Harold John Ernest Peter, the son of Charles W. and Louise W. (Schmidt) Peter, was the youngest and sole surviving of 10 children born on April 2, 1924, in Harrison Township Boone County. He attended schools in Kossuth County, graduating in 1939. After school, Harold joined the US Military serving in the Merchant Marine/Coast Guard on Jan. 3, 1945, and served until March 14, 1946. Returning home after the military, Harold worked for McGuire Highway Construction, managed the local Texaco station before embarking on a career distributing automotive supplies.
On June 29, 1952, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Jeanette Johnson in Thompson. Harold was an avid fisherman and member of the American Legion proudly serving on the Legions Military Color Guard, Izaak Walton League, and the Lutheran Laymen’s League.
Left to cherish Harold’s memory are his children, Lisa (Joseph Kenneally) Howard of Ft. Myers, Fla.; Lynn (Emmanuel) Montanez of Coto De Caza, Calif.; and Harold Paul (Siri) Peter of Canton, Ga.; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Jeanette Peter; second daughter, Lori L. (Bob) Goulder; and parents, Charles and Louise Peter.
