Donald Reimers passed away Jan. 28, 2025, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center at the age of 90. Funeral service was 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 3, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Burt. Services were livestreamed via Lentz Funeral Home’s website. Interment took place at Burt Township Cemetery. Visitation was Sunday, Feb. 2, from 4 - 6 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Burt. Services were entrusted to Lentz Funeral Home of Burt.
Donald Reimers was born April 15, 1934, on a farm in Fenton to William Reimers and Anna (Looft) Reimers from Fenton. Shortly after that, Anna moved the family to Burt to raise her children as a single parent where Don attended Burt High School graduating in 1952.
Donald had a love for vehicles working at the local DX station in Burt during high school. During summers he would work at Patterson’s Farm in Swea City putting up hay and would go out to Montana each year to chop down Christmas trees. In winter he would ride the railroad from Burt to Fenton to help scoop snow off the tracks for the train to go through. Eventually Don got a job driving a rendering truck picking up deceased animals then switched to driving a milk truck for Borden’s Dairy which later became Marigold Foods. In 1992, he went to work for Exceptional Opportunities in Burt driving the transit bus. During his spare time, he would mow lawns, play some golf in the over 50 league and fish.
Donald believed in servicing the community. He joined the Burt City council and he eventually became the mayor of the City of Burt, serving the community for 30 years. He served as head usher for St. John’s Lutheran Church for many years.
Donald met and married his wife of 69 years – Janice (Madsen) Reimers on July 22, 1955. Together they had five children. Reverend Russell Reimers (Susan) of Fairmont, Minn.; Douglas Reimers (deceased); Patricia Grimm (Randy) of Milford; Pamela Reimers of Burt and Randall Reimers of Burt. He has seven grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by other family members.
He was preceded into death by his son Douglas Reimers; his mother Anna; parents’ in-law William and Mathilda Madsen; brothers Harold Reimers and Carrol Reimers; a sister Margaret Batt; brothers-in-law Howard (Swede) Batt, William Madsen Jr., Merlin (Red) Madsen and Charles Johnson; sisters-in-law Shirley Reimers, Virginia Reimers, Janet Madsen and Pam Madsen; and other nieces and nephews.
