AMES—One sure sign that fall is here is when the garden centers and greenhouses fill up with beautiful fall mums. 

Horticulturists with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach offer tips on growing and caring so you can get the most enjoyment out of fall mums.

 

What is the difference between garden mums purchased and planted in the spring and fall mums found in the garden centers and florist shops in early fall?

Crop, soybean production report

DES MOINES—Iowa corn production is forecast at 2.49 billion bushels, down 2 percent from the previous year, according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Crop Production report. 

Based on conditions as of September 1, yields are expected to average 200.0 bushels per acre, down 5.0 bushels per acre from the August 1 forecast and down 5.0 bushels from last year. 

Unseasonably warm temps return

DES MOINES—Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig has commented on the Iowa Crop Progress and Condition Report released by the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service. The report is released weekly April through November.

“After a warm and dry week, a shift in the weather pattern brought cooler temperatures and widespread rainfall across Iowa over the weekend,” said Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig.

ALGONA—Jim Schumacher was a classic car enthusiast. His wife, Janice, said they loved to go cruising to area towns in their 1967 Plymouth Belvedere, the same kind of car they drove when they got married in 1968. He enjoyed talking about classic cars and going to car shows and cruise-ins any chance he got.

ALGONA—State Street in downtown Algona will be the place to be for a variety of fun activities during the family fun festival, Last Call Before Fall, on Saturday, September 24. 

The event will be held from 4-7 p.m. and is sponsored by the Algona Area Chamber of Commerce.

Fall official begins on September 22 and Last Call Before Fall should be a great celebration of the new season.

Teresa’s Bridal & Prom celebrates

ALGONA—A part-time job working in a bridal business when she was in high school and on college breaks, led Alyssa Urban to her dream job of owning that same business, Teresa’s Bridal & Prom.

Three years ago, Urban bought the business on July 1, 2019 from Teresa Kellenberger who had started the business and owned it for 37 years. The business marked its 40th year in existence this summer.

Algona to get new Hotel 

 

 

 

ALGONA—Pharmacists Mutual Insurance Group announces that its Investment Committee has approved the construction of a Grandstay Hotel. This 57-unit lodging complex will be located on the property directly west of Pharmacists Mutual's headquarters on Highway 18, in Algona.

Wesley Community Club Volunteers needed

 

 

The Wesley Community Club met on September 11 at the community center to discuss upgrades to the community center that are needed. Anyone with a Wesley address is invited to all the meetings. For the community club events to continue they need more volunteers with the planning and running of the events. Some committee members are taking a step back from the planning and running of events due to busy personal schedules.

 Jeff and Tracy (Blumer) Weber will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary on September 11. They were married on September 11, 1982.

Algona Chapter of DAR prepares for Constitution Week, Sept. 17-23

ALGONA—Business of the Algona Chapter of the DAR was conducted by Regent Linda Erpelding and officers, with members participating in person and online on August 9.

For the American Indian Report, Karen Meurer gave a report on early Indian activity. Meurer also encouraged members to update the ISDAR website with their patriot reports.

Mescher receives Congeniality Award

The Algona Area Chamber of Commerce presented a Congeniality Award  to Fareway employee Al Mescher last week.

Mescher was nominated by the Ambassadors back in 2020, but due to COVID and schedule conflicts, they were not able to arrange a time to present Mescher his award until now.

Boy Scouts clean up ditches

ALGONA—You might have seen Boy Scout Troop 71 north of Algona on Highway 169 picking up trash. They were out there cleaning their Adopt-A-Highway ditches up for about three hours. 

“These Scouts and volunteer adults did such a great job,” Mandie Studer said.
