Graveside services for Wardden Smidt, of Titonka will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 13, 2024, at Ramsey Reformed Cemetery outside of Titonka, with a lunch to follow in the church basement.

Wardden William Smidt was born Nov. 14, 1933, in Titonka, son of Siemen and Frances (Tjaden) Smidt. He grew up around Titonka and started school at the German Valley Country School then graduated from Titonka High School. On Sept. 8, 1955, Wardden was enlisted in the US Army. He served on active duty in the infantry in the motor pool in Korea. He was a Marksmen and received a Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged on June 20, 1957.

On May 17, 1958, Wardden was united in marriage to Velda Brandt at Trinity Lutheran Church in Elmore, Minn.. Together they resided around the Titonka area and were blessed with three sons, Steven, Scott and Sidney.

Wardden worked as a farmer his entire life. He started with his father and passed it down to his boys.

He enjoyed canning, gardening and being on the farm. He enjoyed spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He was a member of Ramsey Reformed Church in Titonka.

Wardden died Friday, Nov. 10, 2023, at the Titonka Care Center. He was 89.

Wardden is survived by his sons, Steven Smidt of Titonka, Scott (Pam) Smidt of Titonka, and Sidney (Barbara) Smidt of Dandridge, Tenn.; grandchildren, Siemen Smidt of Fayston, Vt., Lexie (Owen Zimmerman) Smidt of Fenton, and Nicole Smidt of Titonka. He is also survived by his brothers, Gary (Joan) Smidt of Titonka and William (Mildred) Smidt of Titonka; sister, Fayann (Bernie) Weydert of Algona; sister-in-law, RoseLyn Pearson of Crosslake, Minn.; brother-in-law, Robert Brandt of Litchfield, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death are his wife, Velda of 63 years; parents; sisters, Sandy Jones and Ellen Smidt; sisters-in-law, Marjorie (Walter) Vereide, Marlene (James) Meyers, and Doris (Robert) Hagedorn and brother-in-law, Arlo Brandt.
