Memorial services for Michael West were celebrated on Friday, Jan. 19, 2024, at 2 p.m. at Oakcrest Funeral Services in Wesley. Inurnment will be at a later date.
Michael Jon West was born Nov. 21, 1956, in Britt, the son of Cletus and Janet (Reibsamen) West. He was truly a unique soul who loved to have a good time and had unconditional love for his family. He attended Corwith-Wesley schools where he enjoyed playing football and graduated in 1975.
Mike was united in marriage to Jean Holm on June 17, 1975. They welcomed three children to this union. Mike moved to the Des Moines area in the late 70’s and was a lifelong worker in the concrete industry. He was known to tell his kids that he “poured that basement” when he was with them cruising the DSM area.
In 1994, Mike moved back to the northern Iowa area and in 1996, was united in marriage to Janis Mitchell.
Mike enjoyed riding RAGBRAI 17 times, golfing, playing cribbage and was an avid reader, especially of the newspaper.
Michael, 67, died of complications from cancer at his home in Lone Rock, on Monday, Jan. 15. He had a unique ability to attract friends from anywhere and will be sorely missed.
He is survived by his wife, Janis; children, Ryan (Gayla) West of Waukee; Renee (Adam) Pedersen of Ledyard; Jerry West of Prairie City; step-children, Nicci Mitchell of Algona; Jaime (Ben) Smith of Clear Lake; and Matthew (Lany) Mitchell of Wesley; grandchildren, Chuck and Sydney Everman; Jack, Tucker, Beau and Everleigh Pedersen; Ramsey and Atreyu West; step-grandchildren, Hannah, Hunter, Hayden and Bentley Smith; Abby, Aly, Carlie and Audrina Yokimishyn; Ruby and Daisy Mitchell. Also surviving are siblings, LuAnn (Doug) Widen of Cedar Falls; LaDonna (Charlie) Struckman of Bellevue; Lynnette (John) Sorensen of West Des Moines; Lorri (Greg) Helleckson of Reno, Nev.; Linda (Greg) Hendren of Pleasant Hill and Rob (Chelsea) West of Van Meter; sister-in-law, Diane West and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Pat and Rich West.
