Memorial Service for Eugene “Gene” D. Hanna, 76, of Lone Rock, will be Friday, Oct. 20, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Burt. Visitation will be held at Oakcrest Funeral Services of Algona on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2023 from 4 to 6 p.m.

Eugene “Gene” Dennis Hanna was born Dec. 4, 1946, to Robert and Phyllis (Seegebarth) Hanna in Algona. He grew up on the Hanna family farm near Lone Rock where he attended school for the majority of his youth, working his first job down the road at the Lotts Creek Creamery. Gene lived a short time with family in South Dakota, graduating from high school in Harrisburg. After high school, Gene returned to the area and was employed at Snap-on Tools.

In 1969, Gene was united in marriage to Delores (Fox) Hanna. To this union three children were born. Following their marriage, they spent a short time residing in Rolfe before moving back to the family farm where Gene farmed with his father for many years, later restoring much of the land back to its natural state and establishing Hanna Ranch Hunting. Gene’s mission was to leave the land better than it was when he got here and he succeeded. Following the dissolution of his marriage, Gene relocated to Burt before returning once again to the family homestead. Gene was united in marriage to Marcia (Lieb) Hanna on June 27, 1998, at a lakeside wedding in Spirit Lake. With this union he gained a step-daughter.

Gene enjoyed the simple things in life: family, friends, wildlife, reading, gardening and spending time with his dogs. He loved making people laugh, stirring the pot, and was always up for a good card game. Gene was a generous and forgiving soul who looked out for others, putting them before himself. He knew how to make everyone feel welcome and will be remembered by many for pheasant hunts and sharing his garden and sweet corn patch harvests. Gene always made himself available to help anyone who needed it, he never cared too much about what others thought of him, and went at his own pace. He will truly be missed by many.

Gene died at the Kossuth Regional Health Center surrounded by family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Marcia of Lone Rock, mother, Phyllis Hanna of Spirit Lake, his children Chris Hanna and Jenny Neyman of Soldotna, Ala., Gina and Shane Helmers of Algona, Amy and Clint Profit of Spirit Lake, Emily (Eimers) and Chase Moser of Solon, and ten grandchildren: Abby and Jessy Hanna, Riley, Caleb, and Ben Helmers, Tommy, Alex, and Carson Profit, and Grace and Gavin Moser. Gene is also survived by three sisters: Jeannette Jensen of Oklahoma City, Okla., Sally Hanna of Spirit Lake, and Linda Feaster of Algona.

He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Johnny in 1961, father, Robert in 1993, as well as his mother-in-law, Helen Lieb, and two brothers-in-law, Rich Feaster and Lee Sloan.

The family would like to extend sincere gratitude to the staff at Kossuth Regional Health Center for their care and compassion as well as to all of the friends and family who continue to provide support during this difficult time.
