A funeral service for Alan Miller, 67, of Fenton, will be held Thursday (today), at 10 a.m. at the Lone Rock Presbyterian Church. The funeral will be livestreamed on the church’s Facebook page.  Burial will follow in Fenton Township Cemetery.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.  Memorials may be directed to the Little Al Foundation or to the Fenton American Legion in Al’s memory.

Alan Richard Miller was born Oct. 27, 1955, in Estherville the son of Bernard “Bud” and JoElla (Culbertson) Miller.  He grew up in Lone Rock graduating from Sentral High School in 1974.  Al was united in marriage to Marcia Marie Theisen on March 18, 1978, at the Lone Rock Presbyterian Church. After their marriage they settled in rural Lone Rock on Al’s Grandfather’s farm, where they welcomed three girls, Michelle, Heather and Ashley.

Al entered the family farming and trucking operation working with his father and later with his brother Gary.  The family moved to Fenton in 1990. Al worked in the agribusiness field for more than 20 years. He enjoyed this work. Part of that time he held a regional seed sales position that allowed him to travel through northwestern Iowa and southern Minnesota where he formed connections with many people (his specialty). In later years he drove truck for Stateline Co-Op, returned to farming and worked construction with his nephews. He cherished his time with them and the bonds they formed. Al’s favorite jobs of all though, were being a dad and grandpa. No ask for help was too big, no question was too tough, no story was too long. He was a husband, father, grandpa, son, brother, uncle, friend and so much more.

In his spare time Al enjoyed camping, fishing, golfing, riding his motorcycle, hunting, spending time with friends and family and traveling with Marcia. These trips were their most special times together.

Al answered the call to serve. He was a member of the Sentral Community School Board from 1986-2001, serving multiple terms as President. He joined the Fenton City Council in 2008 and was appointed mayor in 2012. He was Commander of the Fenton Sons of the American Legion Squadron 627 and most recently joined the Kossuth County Community Foundation. Al was a founding member and the chairman of the Board for the Little Al Foundation, along with his brother Ryan, in honor of his nephew and namesake “Little Al.”  Alan was a lifetime member of the Lone Rock Presbyterian Church where he served as youth group leader, trustee and elder. He served with positivity, humor, and an ever-present smile.
