Pulitzer Prize winner with area roots

Art Cullen, a man with deep Algona area roots and tenacity in journalism won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing on Monday, April 10. 
Spurred on by his desire for justice, Cullen began writing a series of editorials in the Storm Lake Times, badgering public officials into abiding the law by releasing public records of county donations. 

Benefit supports man with cancer

WHITTEMORE — Despite battling a rare form of kidney cancer, Royce said he felt “blessed” while standing in front of St. Michael’s Parish Center on Sunday morning talking and meeting with family and friends.
“It’s awesome,” he said. “It really makes you appreciated the small town. Everyone cares for each other and rallies together to help each other.”

WB-Mallard student dies in car crash

WEST BEND — A single vehicle rollover accident claimed the life of Hunter J. Origer, 17, of West Bend, on Wednesday, April 5.
“Hunter was a student with a lot of potential,” said West Bend-Mallard School District Superintendent Amanda Schmidt on Thursday morning. “He was kind to everyone that he met.”

Providing information to an ag community

Many say that information is knowledge. Those attending last week’s Ag Education Day in Emmetsburg soaked in all the information they could from agronomists, an economist, a climatologist and a person who discussed generational differences in the workplace.

The Wizard of Oz comes to Algona

Algona High School students are not in Kansas anymore.  Drama students are getting ready to perform in the upcoming Wizard of Oz musical on March 31 and April 1 at 7 p.m. at the Ed and Betty Wilcox Performing Arts Center. 
Rachel Zuetlau, an English and language arts teacher at AHS, is directing the musical with the help of Jamie Kelley, AHS vocal music instructor and the production’s music director.
