The Algona City Council approved a housing project on Lucas Street.
The project is being carried out by the landowner, Darren Tietz, and Tom Geelan, a realty agent at Farm and Home Services. The plan currently includes six lots just west of Finn Drive.

Life seems to be getting busier and busier every day. Carlyle Engelby has been cooking chicken for 50 years at the Ledyard chicken feed.
"I've seen it all," he said. "Wind blowing while we were cooking the chicken. We've been caught in rain twice." Engelby, who turns 90 in September, was cooking the chicken with his sons and grandsons on Friday at the 53rd annual event.

The new pastor for Bethany Evangelical and Reformed Church had planned on working in the family business. The 2008 market collapse squelched that idea. Almost 12 years later, Colin Andrade moved to Ledyard to take over the pastor's position at the church.
"I want to make sure the church stays strong and healthy," he said. "My biggest fear is I don't want to mess up the ship."

A $1 cup of coffee at Bank Plus in Ledyard means there is a good chance the money is going to worthy cause.
Since the Coffee Shop donations started in 2017, those who have had a cup of coffee or bottle of water or a can of soda have provided more than $8,000 to help members and others in the community.

Cheryl Grether will resign from her seat on the Algona Community School District Board of Directors, effective Nov. 5.
She made the announcement that she will end a 12-year run on the board at Monday night's regular meeting, Aug. 12.

The Algona City Council and the Kossuth County Board of Supervisors are in talks to decide what to do about Algona's Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and the growing disparity between its expenses and revenue.
The issue stems from the fact that nearly two-thirds of the southern half of Kossuth County is served by the Algona EMS, according to Algona City Administrator Curt Wiseman.

The Seely-Walsh Post #425 of the American Legion held a ceremony last Wednesday in Whittemore to honor Purple Heart veterans. That day was Aug. 7, which marks national Purple Heart Day, according to Bill Simonson, Sons of the American Legion member.
"We've been doing this for 11 years," Sons of the American Legion Commander Ron Askland said. "Our members and any member of the community" take part.

School hasn't even started, and children are already enjoying the new playground equipment at Bertha Godfrey and Bryant elementary schools.
Bertha Godfrey and Bryant Elementary Principal Brad Sudol said he has already seen children playing on both playgrounds since the projects were completed recently.

Tietz Park has an outdoor fitness center, courtesy of a Rotary district grant, the Algona Rotary Club and Kossuth County Community Foundation.
The total cost of the project was $8,300. The Algona Rotary Club and Rotary district grant split an estimated $7,500 of the cost. The Kossuth County Community Foundation provided $800 to complete the project.

Directors dealt with a nursing contract with Kossuth Regional Health Center, open enrollments and staffing matters, and they heard about facilities work during a 40-minute Algona Community School Board meeting Monday evening, Aug. 12.
Board members approved a contract with KRHC to provide school nursing services to the school district for the coming year.

This summer my family vacationed in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. The cabin in which we stayed for several days of the trip was near the top of a mountain. The view of the surrounding mountain tops was stunning.

Raising money for the 2024 quasiquicentennial celebration and having fun are the two goals of the upcoming Lone Rock Fun Day.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg, Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig and Iowa Department of Natural Resources Director Kayla Lyon were scheduled to recognize 53 Iowa farm families for their environmental stewardship during a ceremony at the Iowa State Fair on Wednesday, Aug. 14.
Among the families were three with Kossuth County ties and several others from the surrounding area.
