Emogene Edna Batt, 85, of Cedar Falls, died peacefully on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2023.

She was born in West Bend on July 10, 1938, the daughter of the late George and Sophia (Harms) Wichtendahl. Emogene attended St. Paul’s Lutheran School in Whittemore before graduating from Whittemore High School in 1957.

Following graduation, she worked at various jobs until she found her passion as an in-home daycare provider where she took care of multiple generations of children over nearly 35 years. On Nov. 2, 1963, Emogene married Harold “Mike” Batt at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Whittemore. Emogene and Mike were blessed by the arrival of their daughter, Tamara, on Nov. 7, 1971. Emogene and Mike shared nearly 60 years of marriage before Mike’s death on May 26, 2022.

After Tamara went to college, Emogene and Mike became foster parents. In the 20 years as foster parents, they opened their home to help nearly 20 kids.

Emogene is survived by her daughter, Tamara (Brian) Buchanan; grandchildren, Meghan and Ian Buchanan; and extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and 10 siblings: Bernard, Delbert, Eleanor, Florence, Harlan, Henry, Laona, Laura, Lorraine and Selma.

The funeral service for Emogene will be at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 513 Clay St, Whittemore, IA 50598. Visitation will be held on Friday, Dec. 8 from 5-7 p.m. at College Hill Lutheran Church, 2322 Olive St, in Cedar Falls, and also at 10:30 a.m. before the funeral on Saturday. Burial will take place at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery in Whittemore, followed by a luncheon at the church.
