Last week, Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats voted to jam through a $1.9 trillion spending bill that included millions to fund liberal pet projects and billions more to bail out blue states. This massive bill, which was crafted in a partisan manner behind closed doors, wasn’t supported by a single Republican and was even opposed by some Democrats. This week, Speaker Pelosi jammed another partisan bill through the House: H.R. 1, which I call the “For the Politicians Act.” Read my thoughts on this disastrous bill and updates on my work over the past week below.
H.R. 1: A dangerous attempt to nationalize our elections
H.R. 1, which is reserved for Speaker Pelosi’s top priority, is an effort by Democrats to take election law away from states and put it into the hands of the federal government. Democrats want Washington to have more power so they can single-handedly decide elections and overrule the will of the people. They call it the, “For the People Act,” but really it’s For the Politicians.
By passing this bill, Democrats voted to fund their campaigns with taxpayer money -- YOUR money. This bill also undermines election integrity by legalizing ballot harvesting, expanding mail-in voting without safeguards, and removing voter ID laws.
In Iowa, we know how to make our elections safe and secure. I worked hard in the Iowa Senate to pass voter ID, which is critical to any fair election process. Democrats’ attempt to nationalize our elections would undermine the integrity of our electoral process and severely infringe on states’ rights, and that’s why I was a strong ‘no’ vote on H.R. 1.

SARAH’S LAW
In a slew of executive orders, President Biden has been rolling back the safer, stricter immigration laws implemented by the Trump administration. These recent actions included a reversal of an executive order that prioritized the prosecution of illegal immigrants who have been charged with committing violent crimes.
This week, I partnered with Sen. Joni Ernst and introduced Sarah’s Law in the U.S. House. This legislation, recently re-introduced in the U.S. Senate by Sen. Ernst, would require immigration authorities to keep illegal immigrants in custody if they are accused of killing someone or inflicting serious bodily injury.
Sarah’s Law is named after Sarah Root, an Iowan who was tragically struck and killed by an illegal immigrant. Edwin Mejia, the illegal immigrant charged in this case, was under the influence of alcohol -- three times the legal limit -- and drag racing when Sarah was killed. Mejia was initially taken into custody by local law enforcement, but due to an Obama-era policy loophole, he posted bond and was released -- despite being in the country illegally. He has since disappeared and still has not been brought to justice nearly five years after Sarah’s death.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Democrats strike GOP-led relief for farmers in COVID bill but retain their own provisions
My amendment providing derecho disaster relief for Iowa farmers passed the Ag Committee with bipartisan support, proving it had merit. Then, it was stripped by Democrats for one simple reason: It was offered by a Republican. Iowans deserve better, and all of rural America deserves better.
