13th-ranked Algona top Cowgirls

Lead Summary

Algona got three hits from Aliyah Buscher and every starter in the red-and-black line-up had at least one hit in an 11-1, five-inning North Central Conference softball victory over the Clarion-Goldfield Cowgirls in a contest played in Algona on Monday, June 19.
The Bulldogs, ranked 13th in the latest Class 3A rankings, improved its overall record to 13-4 and the squad is now tied for the top spot in the conference with a mark of 8-1 with second-ranked Humboldt, who Algona gave its only loss at 2-0.
After a scoreless first inning, the Cowgirls scored an unearned run in the second frame.  The inning started with a leadoff single but the next two batters were retired.  But another single and an outfield error by the red-and-black gave the visitors the lead at 1-0.
The home team dented the scoreboard first in the second inning with three, big two-out runs.  Grace Meints and Buscher each singled and moved up 60 feet on a sacrifice by Sam Hood.
