West Bend-Mallard fall to No. 14 Titans 80-52

 

ROCKWELL CITY—The West Bend-Mallard Wolverine girls’ basketball squad lost to No. 14 ranked (Class 2A) South Central Calhoun on Tuesday, Jan. 24 by the score of 80-52.

The first quarter was tight as the home team led 16-14 at the end of the first eight minutes. The Titans held a 36-30 advantage at intermission and led 61-39 at the conclusion of the third period.

Crooks pours in 42 points for Golden Bears

 

ALGONA—Senior Audi Crooks poured in 42 points to lead top-ranked Bishop Garrigan to a 69-26 Top of Iowa Conference girls’ basketball victory over the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Cardinals on Tuesday, Jan. 24.

Crooks had been unstoppable in the past two games by scoring 87 points on an incredible 38-41 shooting from the floor.

Titans too much for WB-M boys 79-55

 

ROCKWELL CITY—South Central Calhoun took the lead early and never looked back in a 79-55 Twin Lakes Conference boys’ basketball victory on Tuesday, Jan. 24 over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines.

The Titans got out fast with 24-10 lead at the end of the first period and enjoyed a 41-24 advantage at intermission. The home team also led 58-38 at the conclusion of the third quarter.

Warriors run past Belmond-Klemme 67-34

 

BELMOND—North Union used their up-tempo style of basketball to run past Belmond-Klemme 67-34 in a Top of Iowa Conference boys’ basketball contest played on Tuesday, Jan. 24.

The green-black-and-silver led 16-6 at the end of the first period and held a 27-17 advantage at intermission. The Warriors extended the lead to 45-23 at the conclusion of the third quarter.

Algona girls improve to 7-1 in NCC play

ALGONA—Holding a strong grip on their second place status in the North Central Conference standings, the Algona Bulldog girls’ basketball squad improved to 7-1 in league and 10-5 overall on Friday, Jan. 20 with a 63-24 victory over Webster City.

The home team rattled off the first 16 points of the contest before the Lynx made their first basket with 3:40 remaining in the first frame.

G-T/R-A topples Wolverine girls 68-54

WEST BEND—Hailey Stalzer poured in a game-high 30 points but it was not enough as the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine girls’ basketball squad lost a 68-54 Twin Lakes Conference contest on Friday, Jan. 20 to the Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire Titans.

No. 5 Webster City edges Bulldogs in overtime

ALGONA—Briar Klaver scored off an offensive rebound at the buzzer to give fifth-ranked Webster City a 74-72 overtime victory on Friday, Jan. 20 over the Algona Bulldog boys’ basketball team in North Central Conference action.

Slagle, Morgan earn NCC titles for Algona

HAMPTON—Sophomore Tate Slagle and freshman Barrett Morgan earned individual titles on Saturday, Jan. 21 to highlight the performances of the Algona Bulldog boys’ wrestling team at the North Central Conference tournament.

AHS wrestlers take pair of non-conference wins

LAKE MILLS—The Algona Bulldog boys’ wrestling team picked up a pair of non-conference victories on Tuesday, Jan. 17.

The red-and-black started the evening with a lopsided 78-6 victory over the Rockford Warriors before defeating the Lake Mills Bulldogs by the score of 51-24.

A total of 10 Bulldog wrestlers went 2-0 on the night as Taevyn Zinnel, Tate Slagle and Colby Jennings all went 2-0 with a pair of falls.

Price, Tobin win titles at Ogden for North Union

OGDEN—Landon Price at 120 pounds and Dalton Tobin at 145 pounds each won titles to highlight the performances of the North Union Warriors wrestling squad at the Ogden Individual Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 21.

Price went a perfect 5-0 on the day with five falls with Tobin going 4-0 at 145 with three falls and one victory by forfeit.

Gretchen Gorham, Stohr claim NCC titles

HAMPTON—Jenna Stohr and Gretchen Gorham claim individual crowns to highlight the performances of the Algona Bulldog girls’ wrestling squad at the first North Central Conference tournament held on Monday, Jan. 23.

Stohr claimed the title at 120 pounds by going 3-0 on the evening. Jenna opened the night with a fall in 1:02 over Allison Lynch of Humboldt before pinning Preslee Dickman of West Fork in 2:18 and won by fall in 5:29 over Aali Martinez of Clear Lake.

G-T/R-A hands Wolverines 63-52 league loss

WEST BEND—Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire led the whole game in a 63-52 Twin Lakes Conference boys’ basketball victory on Friday, Jan. 20 over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines.

The Titans built a 20-10 lead after the first eight minutes of play and took a 38-20 advantage to the locker room at halftime. The visitors also led 47-35 heading into the fourth quarter of action.

Eagles nip North Union boys in overtime

BRITT—West Hancock scored the first five points in overtime and held on for a 47-46 Top of Iowa Conference boys’ basketball overtime win on Friday, Jan. 20 over the North Union Warriors.

The visitors got off a solid start and led 13-8 at the end of the first period and 21-16 at intermission. West Hancock rallied to lead 31-25 at the conclusion of the third quarter and the contest was dead-locked at 40-40 at the end of regulation.

Golden Bears earn eighth win of season

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan built a five-point first quarter advantage and gradually pulled away in a 74-57 Top of Iowa Conference boys’ basketball victory on Saturday, Jan. 21 over the Forest City Indians.

The home team led 17-12 at the conclusion of the first period and led 36-23 at intermission. The black-and-gold held a 57-43 lead at the end of the third period.

Warrior girls use miracle finish for road victory

BRITT—Trailing 42-38 with 15 seconds remaining, the North Union Warrior girls’ basketball squad needed a miracle finish for a win on Friday, Jan. 20 and they got one.

First, Emily Meyer drained a three-pointer with nine seconds left to slice the lead to 42-41 and a timeout was called.

Crooks moves into Top 10 on all-time scoring list

ALGONA—Senior Audi Crooks connected on 21 of 22 shots for 45 points to move into the top 10 on the all-time scoring list in the state of Iowa in a 95-49 Top of Iowa Conference girls’ basketball win for Bishop Garrigan over the Forest City Indians on Saturday, Jan. 21.

Crooks now sits at No. 9 all-time with 2,285 career points so far in her great career and continues to move up into rarified air with her amazing totals.
