CLEAR LAKE—Algona won one event and was the runner-up in six more to finish in second place in the team standings with 88 points in 12-team North Iowa Boys’ Indoor Championships held on Friday, March 24.

The lone first place for the red-and-black came in the 1,600-meter run where Gavin Weber crossed the finish line first with his time of 4:49.61.

New football districts released

BOONE—Once every two years, the Iowa High School Athletic Association sets forth its next round of district shuffling for football teams.

Driven by enrollment numbers and new socioeconomic factors, some schools take a step upward while some dip down and others rearrange their direction of travel as still others find familiar company.

Moriah Knapp wins 3,000 at Clear Lake

CLEAR LAKE—Moriah Knapp won the 3,000-meter run with a time of 11:03.48 to highlight the performances of the Algona Bulldog girls’ track squad at the North Iowa Girls’ Championships held on Thursday, March 23.

The red-and-black placed third in four different events, including Summer Thompson in the long jump with a leap of 15’ 6¼” as did Natalie Johnson in the 60-meter dash in 8.37.

All-Area Alumni Golf Tournament to play June 10

 

 

ALGONA—Registration is open for the second annual all-area alumni golf tournament on June 10, sponsored by the Algona Parks and Recreation Department. Alumni of all high schools in the Kossuth County area are invited to play. A rain date has been set for Sunday, June 11.

Good showing for AHS, BGHS boys at Humboldt

HUMBOLDT—Both the Algona and Bishop Garrigan boys’ track teams had a good showings at the Nielsen Family Indoor Meet on Friday, March 17.

Algona won three events, took second in three and was third in two more while Bishop Garrigan’s evening was highlighted by one second place and third place finish in a relay.

West Bend-Mallard girls win 4 x 400 at BV Elite Meet

STORM LAKE—Placing first in the 4 x 400-meter relay highlighted the performances of the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine girls’ track at the Buena Vista Elite Meet held on Friday, March 17.

The purple-and-gold crossed the finish line first in the 4 x 400-meter relay as the quartet of Abi Schmidt, Maddie Fehr, Shaylee Wise and Kierstin Montag won the event with their winning time of 4:32.00.

STORM LAKE—A second place finish by Sam Fehr in the 400-meter dash highlighted the performances of the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys’ track team at the Buena Vista Elite Meet held on Friday, March 17.

Warrior girls run indoors at Storm Lake

STORM LAKE—Seeing their first action of the 2023 campaign, the North Union Warrior girls’ track squad competed in the Buena Vista Elite track meet held on Saturday, March 18.

Shelby Fraker was the top place winner for the green-black-and-silver as the senior finished in fourth place in the 200-meter dash with her time of 28.46.

Rasch, Prochniak win events for NU boys at Storm Lake

STORM LAKE—Colin Rasch and Bryer Prochniak each won an event to highlight the performances of the North Union Warrior boys’ track team at the BV Elite track meet held on Saturday, March 18.

Rasch won the shot put event with a winning heave of 47’ 2” while Prochniak sprinted to first place in the 60-meter dash with his time of 7.04.

AHS, BG girls run at Humboldt Indoor

HUMBOLDT—The Algona girls’ track team along with a couple of members of the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears squad competed at the Nielsen High School Girls Indoor track meet on Thursday, March 16.

The red-and-black finished in third place in the team standings with 80 points as Bishop Garrigan was seventh with 33 team points with Humboldt taking the team title with a total of 110 points.

Coach Wadle Inducted into IFCA Hall of Fame

Bishop Garrigan head football coach Marty Wadle was recently inducted into the Iowa Football Coaches Association. Coach Wadle was joined at the event by his family with his wife Jill, his son Reece and daughter Megan along with many family, friends, former players and assistant coaches.

Pair of former Golden Bears earn post season honors

A pair of former Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears basketball players earned recognition at the conclusion of the season. Angelo Winkel of DMACC was named to the first-team NJCAA Region XI squad while T.J. Schnurr was a first-team American Rivers Conference squad selection. Winkel’s DMACC team ended the year at 24-8 while Schnurr’s Coe team compiled a season record of 16-13.

Ulfers named to 2023 Shrine Bowl

Lamorn Ulfers of Algona High School was selected to play on the North squad for the annual Shrine Bowl football game at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls on Saturday, July 22. Lamorn is pictured with his parents Tina and Brad along with shriner Dean Jacobson.

Tall, lengthy Bluejays to long for Algona boys

DES MOINES—A langy, tall top-ranked Bondurant-Farrar Bluejays proved to be too long for the Algona Bulldog boys’ basketball team in the opening round of the Class 3A state tournament on Tuesday, March 7 as the Bluejays handed the red-and-black an 81-52 defeat.

Helmers named third-team all-state by IPSWA

DES MOINES—Algona sophomore Ben Helmers was chosen to the Class 3A third-team all-state team this past weekend by a vote of the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association.

Helmers led the state qualifying Bulldogs in scoring by tossing in 443 points in 25 games for a season scoring average of 17.72 points per contest.
