Cross-town baseball contest goes to Golden Bears 9-3

ALGONA HIGH—Taking full advantage of seven Algona errors, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears took the cross-town baseball game by the score of 9-3 in the Game played at Bulldog Park on Friday, May 19.

The visitors broke a 3-3 deadlock in the top of the fifth inning with four unearned runs and added two more in the seventh frame for the victory.

North Union girls earn two sixth-place finishes

DES MOINES—Earning medals in two different events, the North Union Warrior girls’ track squad scored six points to finish in 40th place in the team standings at the Class 1A state track meet last weekend.

Senior Shelby Fraker finished in sixth place in the Saturday’s 100-meter dash with a time of 12.92. Shelby qualified for the finals by placing seventh in the prelims in 13.08.

Knapp finishes 6th in 3,000 at state meet

DES MOINES—Senior Moriah Knapp placed sixth in the 3,000-meter run to highlight the performances of the Algona Bulldog girls’ track squad at the Class 3A state track meet this past weekend.

Knapp crossed the finish line on Thursday with a clocking of 10:49.75 as Ballard’s Paitlyn Noe won the event with a new state record time of 9:38.82.

Two WB-M freshmen medal at state meet

DES MOINES—A pair of West Bend-Mallard Wolverine girls’ track members earned medals last week at the Class 1A state track meet held inside Drake Stadium.

Tyra Schupbach ended up in sixth place overall in the 3,000-meter run on Thursday with her clocking of 11:06.88 for the purple-and-gold.

Capesius, Goche lead BG to season-opening win

ALGONA—Abbie Capesius had three hits, including a pair of triples and Darius Goche struck out 12 batters to lead the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears softball squad to a 5-2 Top of Iowa Conference victory over Belmond-Klemme on Monday, May 22.

The black-and-gold scored one run in the first inning, plated two more in both the third and fifth frames in the league win as the visitors plated single runs in the first and seventh innings.

AHS softball wins season opener

ALGONA—Seniors Lily Elsbecker and Lillian Etherington each rapped out a pair of hits on Monday, May 22 to lead the Algona Bulldogs softball squad to 5-2 season-opening non-conference victory over Pocahontas Area.

The red-and-black pushed across three runs in the both the first and sixth innings along with a pair of tallies in the third and fourth frames in the win.

Algona Bulldog Abby Brooks qualifies for 3A state golf meet

STORM LAKE—Algona junior Abby Brooks placed fifth overall to qualify for the Class 3A girls’ state golf tournament from the regional tournament played at the Lake Creek Golf Course on Wednesday, May 17.

Abby will now play on Thursday, May 25 and Friday, May 26 at the Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls in the Class 3A state tournament.

Steenhoek pitches AHS past Spencer 5-1

SPENCER—Senior right-hander Austin Steenhoek twirled a two-hit gem to lead the Algona Bulldogs on Thursday, May 18 to a 5-1 non-conference baseball victory over the Spencer Tigers.

Steenhoek tossed all seven frames to get the win, needing only 74 pitches to earn the victory. The tall right-hander allowed just one earned run on two hits while fanning nine, walked two and hit a batter.

Monson repeat winner at speedway

ALGONA—Oliver Monson was the only repeat winner on night number two at the Kossuth County Speedway on Thursday, May 18.

The car count was light on night number two as only 57 cars were at the track, with the hobby stock class having the highest car count at 18.

Von Bank, Lichter advance to state golf meet

 

LIVERMORE—Both Olivia Von Bank of North Union and Avery Lichter advanced to the Class 1A state girls’ golf meet from the regional final meet played at the Spring Valley Golf Course on Wednesday, May 17.

Von Bank finished in fifth place with an 18-hole score of 92 just ahead of Lichter in sixth place and the final qualifying spot with her total of 94.

Golden Bears drop pair of games on Saturday

 

ALGONA—Playing host to a pair of non-conference opponents on Saturday, May 20, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears baseball was on the short end of two five-inning losses.

The black-and-gold dropped at 17-1 contest to the Webster City Lynx in the opener and fell 17-0 to the Remsen St. Mary’s Hawks in their second game of the day.

Golden Bears’ baseball cruise in league opener

ALGONA—Erupting for 14 runs in the bottom of the first inning, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear baseball team cruised to a 20-0, four-inning Top of Iowa Conference win on Monday, May 22 over Belmond-Klemme.

The black-and-gold had eight hits in the rout as Drew Lappe ripped a double along with singles from Cal Birkey, Andrew Fogarty, Garrett Heying, Nathan Merron, Thadd Kollasch, Keaton Helleseth and Benjy Trainer.

Walks, stranded runners doom AHS boys in opener

 

ALGONA—Two big factors in the Algona Bulldogs’ baseball team’s season opening 3-2 loss to Charles City on Tuesday, May 16 were base-on-balls and stranded runners.

The red-and-black pitchers recorded a total of 15 strikeouts during the evening but allowed 13 free passes and Bulldogs stranded 11 runners on the base-paths during the contest.

High School Trap-Shoot Results

ALGONA—The Bishop Garrigan and Algona High School Trap-Shooting teams hosted six schools at the Izaak Walton League Club north of Algona.

The Algona #1 team had the best score of the day with a 223 as the Belmond-Klemme FFA Trap-Shoot squad was second with a 214 and the Emmetsburg Hot Shots #8 took third place with a 211.

BG 3rd, WB-M 5th, NU 6th at 1A girls’ track meet

ARMSTRONG—Three area girls’ track squads had a good showing on Thursday, May 11 at the Class 1A regional meet as a total of 20 young ladies from the three teams qualified in 20 events for this week’s state track meet in Des Moines.

Bishop Garrigan qualified six girls in nine different events to lead the way and finished in third place in the team standings with 100 points.

NEVADA—Just one week after claiming yet another North Central Conference track title, the Algona Bulldog boys’ track team had an impressive night at the Class 3A district track meet on Thursday, May 11.
