Warriors take sole possession of first place

SWEA CITY—North Union took over sole possession of first place in the Top of Iowa Conference softball standings with a hard-fought 2-0 victory on Monday, June 5 over the Lake Mills Bulldogs.

The only scoring of the contest came in the bottom of the first stanza when Shelby Fraker reached on a one out error and raced home on an RBI single off the bat of Olivia Von Bank.

Bishop Garrigan 10-run Lady Bison 13-3

 

 

BUFFALO CENTER—Bishop Garrigan broke open a 3-0 contest with 10 runs in their final two at bats in a 13-3, six-inning Top of Iowa Conference softball victory on Monday, June 5 over the North Iowa Lady Bison.

Mustangs top WB-Mallard 22-3

 

WEST BEND—Newell-Fonda scored in every inning in a 22-3 softball victory over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines junior varsity squad in Friday, June 2.

The Mustangs pushed across five runs in the first, third and fourth innings along with four in the second and three in fifth stanza as the purple-and-gold scored twice in the bottom of the fourth frame and once in the fifth inning.

ALGONA—Darius Goche twirled a five-inning no-hitter as Abbie Capesius ripped a double and a triple, Ella Schaaf had a single and a double and knocked in four RBI in an 11-1, five-inning Top of Iowa Conference win over the Eagle Grove Eagles.

Lichter takes 3rd at Class 1A state golf meet

BOONE—Bishop Garrigan junior Avery Lichter had a great two days at the Class 1A girls’ state golf tournament played on Thursday, May 24 and Friday, May 25 at the Cedar Pointe Golf Course.

Avery started the tournament on Thursday with a nine-hole round of 45 that featured pars on Holes No. 1, 4 and 7 before shooting a 41 on the back nine  that included pars on Holes No. 15, 16 and 17 for an 18-hole of 86.

Brooks finishes 49th at 3A state tourney

CEDAR FALLS—Algona junior Abby Brooks placed 49th at the Class 3A girls’ state golf meet played at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course on Thursday, May 25 and Friday, May 26.

Abby started off on Thursday with a 45 on the front nine that included pars on Holes No. 3, 6 and 7 and followed that up with 48 on the back nine that featured pars on Holes 10 and 14. She had an 18-hole total of 93 which left her in 36th place after the first day.

Golden Bears win cross-town softball contest 5-1

ALGONA HIGH—Bishop Garrigan built an early 3-0 lead after two and half innings and went onto a 5-1 victory over the Algona Bulldogs in the annual cross-town softball contest played on Wednesday, May 24.

The black-and-gold had nine hits in the game and took advantage of five Bulldog errors, while the home team had five hits on the evening with the Golden Bears committing a pair of errors.

Cantu leads AHS softball to big NCC win

ALGONA—Ashley Cantu had three hits and drove in three runs to help lead the Algona Bulldogs softball squad to a key early season North Central Conference 4-2 victory over the Webster City Lynx.

The red-and-black scored twice in the second inning along with single tallies in the third and fifth stanza as the Lynx plated single runs in the third and seventh frames.

Beth Streuber blasts homer in Warrior win

ARMSTRONG—Beth Streuber belted her first home run of the season to help lead the North Union Warriors softball squad to a 14-0, three-inning Top of Iowa Conference win over Forest City on Friday, May 26.

The green-black-and-silver scored six times in the opening frame and tallied eight more runs in the second frame in the contest shortened to three innings.

Lake Mills tops Golden Bears 10-7

LAKE MILLS—Two three-run outbursts were too much to overcome for the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears softball squad in a 10-7 Top of Iowa Conference loss on Friday, May 26 to the Lake Mills Bulldogs.

The home team scored three runs in both the second and fifth innings along with two in the fourth stanza and single runs in the first and third frames, while the black-and-gold plated one in the third, two runs in the fourth and four in the seventh inning in the loss.

Wolverines win road baseball contest

LYTTON—West Bend-Mallard scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to squeeze out a 6-4 Twin Lakes Conference baseball game on Wednesday, May 24 over the South Central Calhoun Titans.

The contest was scoreless until the third inning when each team scored once. The home team took the lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth but the Wolverines responded with a tally in the top of sixth stanza to tie the game.

Bishop Garrigan upsets No. 7 E-LC 7-1

ALGONA—Nathan Merron pitched seven strong innings to lead the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears baseball team past Estherville-Lincoln Central 7-1 in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday, May 24.

Merron gave up on unearned run on just three hits while fanning six Midgets, issued one base-on-balls and hit a batter in the contest.

Forest City tops Warriors 16-1

BANCROFT—A 10-run first inning was too much for the North Union Warriors baseball team to overcome on Friday, May 26 in a 16-1, five-inning Top of Iowa Conference baseball loss to the Forest City Indians.

The visitors added single runs in the third and fifth frames along with four tallies in the fourth stanza as the green-black-and-silver plated their only run in the bottom of the first inning.

Second-ranked Knights edge Algona Bulldogs 10-7

ALGONA—Algona battled second-ranked Mason City Newman pitch-by-pitch on Thursday, May 25, but the Knights plated four runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull out a 10-7 non-conference baseball win over the red-and-black.

The home team scored first with a run in the first inning before the maroon-and-white plated one run in the second and two more in the third frame for an early 3-1 advantage.

Three straight wins for Monson in Algona

ALGONA—Oliver Monson won his third straight feature while Matt Looft and the Vader brothers won for the second time this summer to highlight Night No. 3 at the Kossuth County Speedway on Thursday, May 25.

A total of 60 cars signed in at the pit shack with the hobby stock class having the highest car count with 15 closely followed by the sport mods with 13 and the stock car class had 11 cars.
