Looft wins Wyffels Hybrid Sport Mods Special

ALGONA—All summer long, Swea City’s Matt Looft has simply dominated the sport mods class at the Kossuth County Speedway.

On Thursday, June 30, things remained the same as Looft led 18 of the 25-lap, $1,000 to win Wyffels Hybrid Sport Mods Special at the track to highlight the evening of exciting dirt track racing.

Big inning leads Golden Bears past North Union baseball team

BANCROFT—A six-run explosion in the top of second inning proved to be the difference in the game as the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears defeated the North Union Warriors 9-4 in a Top of Iowa Conference baseball contest on Friday, June 23.

Algona Bulldog softball earns NCC road victory 5-2

IOWA FALLS—One big inning proved to be the difference as the Algona Bulldogs’ softball squad earned a 5-2 road North Central Conference victory on Monday, June 26 over the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets.

The visitors broke a scoreless dead-lock in the top of the fourth inning with a run before scoring four times in the top of the fifth stanza for a 5-0 advantage.

Streuber’s blast leads North Union past Golden Bears

SWEA CITY—Beth Streuber’s laser shot home run broke a scoreless dead-lock in the fourth inning to help lead the North Union Warriors’ softball squad past the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears 2-0 on Friday, June 23.

Central Springs wins ranked matchup over Warriors 1-0

MANLY—In a battle of top 10 ranked Class 2A softball squads on Thursday, June 22, third-ranked Central Springs Panthers edged No. 10 North Union Warriors 1-0 in a non-conference old-fashion pitcher’s duel.

The home team scored the only run of the contest in the bottom of the third inning. The Panthers had only one hit in the contest but took advantage of four errors by the Warriors while the visitors had five hits, including three doubles.

Bishop Garrigan topples Lady Bison 10-1

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan pounded out 12 hits in a 10-1 Top of Iowa Conference softball victory over the North Iowa Lady Bison on Monday, June 26.

Each team scored once in the opening frame before the home team took control of the contest with three tallies in the bottom of the fourth stanza as Abbie Capesius blasted a long home run that cleared the center field fence and landed on the road the goes past the high school.

Wolverines close out season with close loss

WEST BEND—The West Bend-Mallard Wolverines’ junior varsity softball squad ended their 2023 season on Friday, June 23 with a tough 11-9 loss to East Sac County.

The purple-and-gold team that played just a junior varsity schedule this summer, finished the season with a mark 2-15 after not having a softball team last season because of a lack of numbers.

Steenhoek pitches Algona past Hampton-Dumont

ALGONA—Senior Austin Steenhoek pitched seven strong innings to lead the Algona Bulldogs’ baseball team to a 4-3 North Central Conference victory on Wednesday, June 21 over the Hampton-Dumont Bulldogs.

The home team scored two runs in the bottom of the second stanza along with single tallies in the third and fifth frames while the visitors plated two runs in the top of the first inning and one more in the sixth.

Lake Mills tops North Union Warriors 6-2

LAKE MILLS—A four-run second inning provided the winning margin on Monday, June 26 as the Lake Mills Bulldogs handed the North Union Warriors’ baseball team a 6-2 Top of Iowa Conference defeat.

The visitors took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, but the Bulldogs answered with four in the bottom of the stanza to take a 4-2 advantage. The home team added insurance run on both the fifth and sixth frames with a single run in each.

Golden Bears rout Bison 15-0 for 20th win

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan earned their 20th victory of the season on Monday, June 26 with a 15-0, four-inning rout over the North Iowa Bison in a Top of Iowa Conference contest.

The black-and-gold started quickly with six runs in the bottom of the first inning before adding a single run in the third and ending the game early with eight runs in the bottom of fourth frame.

Haynes twirls two-hit gem in 5-0 shutout

ALGONA—Sophomore pitcher Ryan Haynes flipped a two-hit shutout as the Algona Bulldogs’ softball squad blanked the Emmetsburg E-Hawks 5-0 in a non-conference contest played on Tuesday, June 20.

The right-hander struck out five and did not issue a base-on-balls in her seven innings of work and also led the red-and-black at the plate with three singles, scored once and drove in an RBI.

No. 11 Newman blanks Golden Bears 4-0

MASON CITY—Mason City Newman scored two runs in both the third and fourth innings to earn a 4-0 non-conference softball victory on Tuesday, June 20 over the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears.

The black-and-gold managed just three hits in the loss as Molly Peterson laced a double along with singles from Abbie Capesius and Zoe Montag.

Ella Schaaf pitched the first 2.1 frames and took the loss in the circle. She gave up one earned run on four hits with no strikeouts or walks.

Poky shutouts Wolverines 9-0

POCAHONTAS—Pocahontas Area blanked the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines junior varsity softball squad by the score of 9-0 on Wednesday, June 21.

The home team plated a run in the bottom of the first stanza followed by three more in the second and added five tallies in the bottom of the fourth inning of play.

West Bend-Mallard had just one hit in the loss as Ashtyn Bollig ripped a two-bagger down the right-field line.

Bishop Garrigan improves to 11-1 in conference

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan remained alone in first place in the Top of Iowa Conference baseball standings with a 10-0, six-inning shutout victory over the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Cardinals on Wednesday, June 21.

The black-and-gold broke open a 2-0 contest with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and ended the game with five more tallies in the bottom of the sixth frame.

Wolverines drop 7-5 non-conference baseball contest

GILMORE CITY—West Bend-Mallard dropped a 7-5 non-conference baseball contest on Tuesday, June 20 to the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Hawks.

The visitors scored three runs in the top of third inning before the purple-and-gold scored a run in the sixth stanza, and then both teams plated four runs in the seventh frame.
