Big district win for Wolverines

WEST BEND—For the second straight week, the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines’ football team picked up a key district victory.

The purple-and-gold defeated Harris-Lake Park on Friday, Sept. 22 by the score of 42-18 to bolster the team’s playoff chances with three games to go.

West Bend-Mallard scored first in the contest on a one-yard run by Landon Montag. Montag ran in the successful conversion as the home team led 8-0 with 3:21 left in the opening frame.

Golden Bears blank Rockford 60-0

ROCKFORD—Bishop Garrigan scored by the run, the pass, a kickoff return and a punt return in a 60-0 eight-man district football victory over the Rockford Warriors on Friday, Sept. 22.

The visitors started the contest off with a loud bang as Owen Murphy returned the opening kickoff for a 76-yard kickoff return.

Drew Lappe split the uprights with the conversion kick as the black-and-gold led 7-0 just 13 seconds into the district game.

Sixth-ranked Bulldogs edge North Union 20-12

ARMSTRONG—Sixth-ranked Lake Mills scored the winning touchdown with 7:30 left to play in the game to earn a hard-fought 20-12 Class A district football win over the North Union Warriors.

The Warriors fell to 2-3 overall and are now 1-3 in district games. The green-black-and-silver’s three losses came to No. 2 Saint Ansgar, No. 5 West Hancock and No. 6 Lake Mills in the toughest district in Class A.

Unbeaten Lake Mills tops Warriors

LAKE MILLS—Lake Mills improved to 6-0 in Top of Iowa Conference volleyball matches with a three-set victory over the North Union Warriors on Tuesday, Sept. 19.
The home team won the opening game by the score of 25-14 before taking the second set by the count of 25-12 and took the third game by the score of 23-15 to end the match.

Wolverines win 10th match of season

WEST BEND—West Bend-Mallard earned their 10th match win of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 19 with a Twin Lakes Conference volleyball victory in three straight sets over the Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire Titans.

The home team took the first two games by identical scores of 25-15 before ending the league match with a 25-9 triumph in the third game.

Golden Bears play host to North Union and WB-Mallard

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan hosted both North Union and West Bend-Mallard in non-conference volleyball matches on Monday, Sept. 25 as each team played two matches during the evening.

The first match of the night saw the North Union Warriors defeat the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears by scores of 22-25, 25-21 and 15-11.

Big NCC homecoming win for Algona volleyball squad

ALGONA—Algona picked up a big North Central Conference volleyball victory in four sets over the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets on Thursday, Sept. 21.

The home team won the opening game by the score of 25-17 before the Cadets took the second set by the count of 24-26. The red-and-black won the final two games by the identical scores of 25-20.

Leading the Bulldogs in digs with 20 was Macy Knapp as Casey VanOtterloo had 16 more and Paige Schmitt added 11 digs.

Golden Bears hand North Iowa third loss of season

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan handed North Iowa just their third loss of the 2023 season on Tuesday, Sept. 19 by defeating the Lady Bison in four tight matches.

The home team won the first game by the score of 25-21 before the blue-and-white fought back to win the second set by score of 23-25.

The black-and-gold responded by winning the third game by the score or 25-1 and ended the match with a 25-16 triumph in the fourth set.

West Bend-Mallard spikers fall to Mustangs

NEWELL—Newell-Fonda defeated the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines in three straight sets in a Twin Lakes Conference contest played on Thursday, Sept. 21.

The Mustangs won the opening game by the score of 25-15 before taking the second set by the count of 25-19 and ended the match with a 25-15 triumph in game number three.

Swim team earns three wins at Fort Dodge meet

FORT DODGE—Winning three different events highlighted the performances of the Algona swim team at a triangular held on Thursday, Sept. 21.

The red-and-black finished in third place with a team score of 38 points as Fort Dodge won the meet with team total of 67 and Perry took second with 59 points.

Freshman Ella Welp was a double winner for the Bulldogs as she won the 50-yard freestyle race in 26.40 and took the 100-yard freestyle event with a time of 59.78.

Golden Bears cruise to homecoming victory

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan erupted for 41 first half points and cruised to a 59-22 homecoming win over the Northwood-Kensett Vikings on Friday, Sept. 15 in eight-man district football play.

Big plays showcased the victory as the black-and-gold scored seven times on plays covering 14 or more yards to improve to 3-1 overall and 3-0 in district contests.

Strong serving leads North Union Warriors past Golden Bears

ARMSTRONG—Strong serving as a team was a huge key for the North Union Warriors’ volleyball squad in a three-set Top of Iowa Conference victory over the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears on Tuesday, Sept. 12.

The green-black-and-silver went 73 of 74 during the evening as a team for 98.6 percent with seven serving aces while the visitors went 51 of 55 for 92.7 percent with eight aces.

Welp wins two events at Perry for swim team

PERRY—Ella Welp continued to turn in impressive performances for the Algona swim team as she won a pair of events on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at Perry.

Welp rewrote a school record she set earlier in the season in the 50-yard freestyle race with her winning time of 26.32 and also took the 100-yard freestyle event in 58.60.

Algona earns key NCC win over Lynx

ALGONA—Algona picked up a key North Central Conference volleyball victory on Thursday, Sept. 14 with a win over the Webster City Lynx in four hard fought sets.

The home team cruised to a 25-11 victory in the opening game but things were very tight in the match from that point on.

West Bend-Mallard splits pair of Twin Lakes matches

LAKE CITY—West Bend-Mallard went on the road on Thursday, Sept. 14 and split a pair of Twin Lakes Conference volleyball matches.

The purple-and-gold defeated the Emmetsburg E-Hawks by the score of 25-23, 28-26 and 25-5 but fell to the South Central Calhoun Titans 19-25, 19-25 and 18-25.

In the win over the E-Hawks, Kierstin Montag pounded home 21 kills to lead the way while teammate Allie Fehr had 10 kills.

Bindel and Forsythe run season bests at Sioux Central

SIOUX RAPIDS—Both Silas Bindel and Grayden Forsythe ran their season bests to highlight the performances of the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams on Thursday, Sept. 14 at the Sioux Central Invitational.

Bindel crossed the finish line in 56th place with a clocking of 20:20.31 while Forsythe stopped the watches at 21:10.52 for 70th place overall.
