Schupbach punches ticket to state cross-country meet

PANORAMA—For the second straight season, West Bend-Mallard’s Tyra Schupbach has punched her ticket to the Class 1A state cross-country meet in Fort Dodge.

Schupbach came across the finish line in second place with her clocking of 19:44.5 at the Class 1A regional meet held on Thursday, Oct. 19, a time that was bested only by second-ranked Alyssa Richman of Manson Northwest Webster’s winning clocking of 19:21.3.

WB-M boys run at district meet in Panorama

PANORAMA—Traveling south on Thursday, Oct. 19, a pair of West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys’ cross-country runners competed in the Class 1A district meet.

Junior Silas Bindel ended up in 48th place overall with his clocking of 21:31.8 while teammate Grayden Forsythe took 61st place with his time of 23:54.1.

Mara Davis places 17th at 3A regional meet

SPENCER—Algona freshman Mara Davis narrowly missed a state cross-country meet trip at the Class 3A regional meet held at the Spencer Municipal Golf Course on Wednesday, Oct. 18.

Davis crossed the finish line in 17th place with her time of 20:30.08; just missing qualifying for the state meet has the top 15 individuals qualified. Ninth-ranked Emma Dani of Gilbert won the event in 19:03.39.

Four wins for the Algona swim team

DECORAH—Picking up four wins on the evening highlighted the performances of the Algona swim team in a meet held here on Thursday, Oct. 19.

Freshman Ella Welp was a double winner for the red-and-black as she took the 50-yard freestyle event in 26.23 and won the 100-yard freestyle race with her winning time of 58.09.

Algona, Garrigan, West Bend-Mallard Football Playoff Pairings Set

Football Playoffs Pairings for Oct. 27 are now set.

Algona will play at Sioux Center. The winner will play either Bishop Heelen or Clear Lake.

Bishop Garrigan will host Remsen St. Mary's. West Bend-Mallard will play at CAM (Anita). The winners of those two games meet in the quarterfinals.

Algona earned its playoff position with a 21-7 win over Hampton-Dumont-CAL Friday night.

Golden Bears win district title with late score

ALGONA—Quarterback Tate Foertsch scored on a one-yard sneak with 29 seconds to play to give the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears’ football team a 20-14 win and the district title on Friday, Oct. 13 over Harris-Lake Park Wolves.

The visitors had tied the contest up at 14-14 with 3:29 to play on a 58-yard pass play before the black-and-gold went 55 yards in 11 plays for the victory.

Algona prevails in crosstown volleyball matchup

ALGONA HIGH—Algona broke away late in a pair of games against Bishop Garrigan and won the crosstown volleyball battle of the two squads on Tuesday, Oct. 10 in a front of a nice crowd on “Pink Out Night” in three straight sets.

Wolverines pound Rockford 78-8

ROCKFORD—Playing their best football of the season, the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines are moving into the playoffs with a lot of momentum.

The purple-and-gold won their fifth straight game on Friday, Oct. 13 with a 78-8 romp over the Rockford Warriors. The Wolverines have outscored their opponents an amazing 310-67 in those final five contests.

The visitors dominated from the opening kickoff that Austin Schmidt returned 75 yards for a quick touchdown.

Second-team all-conference honors for Morphew

MASON CITY—North Union’s Gavyn Morphew garnered second-team all-conference honors to highlight the performances of a pair of area boys’ cross-country teams at the Top of Iowa Conference meet held on the campus of NIACC on Thursday, Oct. 12.

Morphew crossed the finish line with a time of 18:50.11 to take 19th place overall. The first 15 place winners were named first-team all-conference as the next 15 finishers were named to the second-team all-conference squad.

Mara Davis is NCC runner-up

FORT DODGE—Freshman Mara Davis of Algona earned first-team all-conference honors on Tuesday, Oct. 10 by finishing as the runner-up at the annual North Central Conference cross-country meet held at the Lakeside Golf Course.

Davis crossed the finish line with a season-best clocking of 20:17.19 to place second, a time that was bested only by champion and sixth-ranked Addison Doughan of Clear Lake in 19:15.31.

Trio of area girls earn Top of Iowa all-conference honors

MASON CITY—A trio of area girls’ cross-country runners earned all-conference honors on Thursday, Oct. 12 at the Top of Iowa Conference meet held on the campus of NIACC.

Two North Union runners earned first-team all-conference honors while a Bishop Garrigan competitor earned second-team all-conference status.

The Warriors ended up in seventh place in the team standings with 162 points as the black-and-gold did not have enough runners for a team score.

AHS boys 2nd; Wilson, Weber earn all-conference status

FORT DODGE—Isaac Wilson and Gavin Weber both earned all-conference honors as the Algona Bulldog boys’ cross-country team finished as the runner-up at the 2023 North Central Conference meet held Tuesday, Oct. 10 at the Lakeside Golf Course.

Wilson ended up in seventh place overall with his time of 18:09.72, just ahead of Weber in eighth place for the red-and-black in 18:10.17.

Algona shares NCC volleyball title with Humboldt

HUMBOLDT—Humboldt continued to be the Algona Bulldogs volleyball squad’s biggest nemesis in the North Central Conference as the Wildcats defeated the red-and-black in three straight sets on Thursday, Oct. 12.

The victory was the 12th straight match win for the Wildcats over the Bulldogs and blue-and-gold has won an incredible 32 straight sets between the two rivals separated by just 30 miles.

Wolverines win conference volleyball match

WEST BEND—Improving to .500 in Twin Lakes Conference matches, the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines’ volleyball squad cruised past Storm Lake St. Mary’s in three straight sets on Tuesday, Oct. 10.

The purple-and-gold is now 5-5 in the league and is 19-20 in games played in those 10 Twin Lake Conference matches.

The home team won the opening set by the score of 25-10 before taking the next two games by identical scores of 25-8.

Warriors end regular season with non-conference win

SPENCER—North Union went on the road to end the 2023 regular on Tuesday, Oct. 10 and returned home with a non-conference volleyball victory in four sets over the Spencer Tigers.

The green-black-and-silver won the first two games by the scores of 25-21 and 25-19. The home team took the third set 16-25 before the Warriors ended the match with a tight 25-23 win in the fourth game.

North Union uses two late scores for 19-18 win

SIBLEY—North Union scored twice in the final three minutes to earn a 19-18 non-district football victory over the Sibley-Ocheyedan Generals on Friday, Oct. 13 in the regular season finale as both teams head into the playoffs.

The two squads scored 24 points in the final four minutes of the game as they only managed a total of 13 points in the first 44 minutes of the contest.
