Wolverine girls remain perfect in Twin Lakes play

WEST BEND—West Bend-Mallard remained perfect in Twin Lakes Conference girls’ basketball play with a 3-0 mark with a 52-47 victory on Friday, Dec. 15 over the Alta-Aurelia Warriors.

The purple-and-improved to 4-2 overall on the year while the Warriors fell to 4-4 overall and Alta-Aurelia is 1-2 in conference games.

Warriors fall to Hull Western Christian 64-44

SIOUX CITY—Playing for the second time in less than 24 hours, the North Union Warrior girls’ basketball squad dropped a 64-44 non-conference contest to Hull Western Christian inside the Tyson Events Center in the two-day Arena Invitational.

The Wolfpack led 13-7 at the conclusion of the first quarter and increased their advantage to 29-18 at intermission. Hull Western Christian led 48-30 heading into the final eight minutes of action.

Wolverine girls fall to North Iowa 59-53

WEST BEND—North Iowa built a nine-point first half lead and held off a second half rally to post a 59-53 non-conference girls’ basketball victory on Thursday, Dec. 14 over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines.

North Iowa jumped out to a 17-11 advantage at the conclusion of the first stanza and took a 29-20 lead at halftime. The Lady Bison led 49-43 heading into the fourth quarter of action.

Malyn Davis wins title at Fort Dodge Invitational

FORT DODGE—Malyn Davis claimed the title at 120 pounds at the Fort Dodge Invitational for the second straight season on Friday, Dec. 15 to highlight the performances of the Algona Bulldog girls’ wrestling squad.

Davis went 3-0 at 120 pounds to take the title with a fall in 1:07 over Andy Barwin of Fort Dodge, pinned Mason City’s Kamina Munson in 5:09 and won a 10-5 decision over Ayden Erickson of Perry in the finals.

Knapp places first at Al DeLeon Invitational

BRITT—Sophomore Mason Knapp finished in first place at 113 pounds to highlight the performances of the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys’ wrestling team on Saturday, Dec. 16.

Knapp (20-3) pinned Jariyah Bowles of AGWSR in the finals to earn his gold medal. The purple-and-gold finished in fifth place in the team standings with 69 points.

Silas Bindel (165) was the runner-up while Wolverine teammates Cortlyn Schupbach (215) and Trenedy Allen (190) both took third place.

Thilges places second at Kuemper for WB-M girls

CARROLL—A pair of West Bend-Mallard girls’ wrestlers competed at the Kuemper Girls’ Wrestling Invitational held on Monday, Dec. 18.

Mercy Thilges finished in second place at 140 pounds in the junior varsity division, going 1-2 with a fall while teammate Kasey Douglas did not place at 140 pounds on the varsity side with a 1-2 record.

 

Moreno, Zinnel 2nd, AHS boys 3rd at Miller Invitational

FORT DODGE—A total of 12 members of the Algona Bulldog boys’ wrestling team earned a medal at the annual Don Miller Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 16.

The red-and-black finished in third place with 164 points in the 15-team field as the host school won the team title with a team score of 243.5 points.

North Union earns conference victory

ARMSTRONG—North Union kept Belmond-Klemme scoreless for the first 10 minutes of the game in a 47-20 Top of Iowa Conference victory on Tuesday, Dec. 12.

The green-black-and-silver held a 15-0 lead at the end of the game’s first eight minutes of play and led 26-10 at halftime. The Warriors led 37-18 at the conclusion of the third quarter of action.

Bishop Garrigan boys cruise past Cardinals 71-56

ALGONA—Three players hit double digits in scoring to help lead the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear boys’ basketball team to a 71-56 Top of Iowa Conference victory over the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Cardinals on Tuesday, Dec. 12.

Freshman Michael Joyce poured in a game-high 20 points closely followed by senior Logan Nemmers with 19 points and sophomore Carter Schwab added 18 points.

Fourth straight win for Bulldog girls

ALGONA—A huge third quarter by the Algona Bulldog girls’ basketball squad broke open a six-point game at intermission and went onto a 64-54 North Central Conference win over the Humboldt Wildcats on Tuesday, Dec. 12.

The home team led 17-12 at the end of the first quarter and Humboldt took a 34-28 advantage to the locker room at halftime.

The red-and-black out-scored the Wildcats 26-5 in the third period to hold a 54-39 lead going into the final eight minutes.

Golden Bear girls improve to 4-0 in conference

ALGONA—Seventh-ranked Bishop Garrigan remained unbeaten in Top of Iowa Conference girls’ basketball play on Tuesday, Dec. 12 with a 66-23 victory over the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Cardinals.

The black-and-gold improved to 6-1 overall and is 4-0 in league play while the Cardinals fell to 2-4 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

Seven Bulldogs win titles at Algona Invitational

ALGONA—Seven different Algona Bulldog girls’ wrestlers finished in first place at the Algona Invitational that took place on Saturday, Dec. 9. No team scores were kept in the tournament.

Harley Tobin pinned a pair of opponents to place first at 100 pounds while Reese Taylor went 3-0 with one fall to take first at 110 pounds.

Eagle Grove tops Golden Bear boys 79-64

EAGLE GROVE—A cold night shooting from both the free throw line and behind the three-point arc was too much to overcome for the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear boys’ basketball team in a 79-64 Top of Iowa Conference loss to the Eagle Grove Eagles.

The black-and-gold hit just four of 23 three-pointer and made only two of 11 attempts from the charity stripe in             the contest.

Algona girls improve to 2-0 in NCC play

WEBSTER CITY—Even a long road trip on cool December night could not slow down the Algona Bulldog girls’ basketball squad in 66-23 North Central Conference win on Friday, Dec. 8 over the Webster City Lynx.

The red-and-black defense was outstanding all evening long but especially in the second half when they allowed just a total of six points, three in  each of      the quarters.

Warrior girls earn Top of Iowa league win

ARMSTRONG—A fast start in the opening frame propelled the North Union Warrior girls’ basketball squad to a 58-48 Top of Iowa Conference victory over the West Hancock Eagles on Friday, Dec. 8.

The home team got off to a great start and led 28-14 at the conclusion of the game’s first eight minutes. The green-black-and-silver also led 34-17 at halftime and 49-32 at the end of the third quarter.

WB-M girls rout Storm Lake St. Mary’s 52-8

STORM LAKE—West Bend-Mallard improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in Twin Lakes Conference girls’ basketball contests with a 52-8 pasting of the Storm Lake St. Mary’s Panthers on Friday, Dec. 8.

The purple-and-gold raced out to an 18-2 advantage at the end of the first stanza. The visitors increased that lead to 40-2 at halftime and held a 48-5 lead at the start of the fourth period.
