Strong fourth quarter leads BGHS boys past Warriors
Bishop Garrigan out-scored North Union 29-11 in the final eight minutes to earn a 69-54 Top of Iowa Conference boys’ basketball victory in a contest played at Armstrong on Friday, Jan. 27.
Freshman Cade Winkel scored 13 straight points for the Golden Bears in fourth period as the black-and-gold turned a 46-42 deficit into a 55-49 advantage during that stretch in the game.
The visitors started quickly in the contest as Drake Buscherfeld nailed a pair of three-pointers, leading to an early time out by the green-black-and-silver.
Nathan Eaton drained a trey to get the Warriors on the scoreboard before a free throw by Brad Capesius and a three-point field goal from Parker Oleson made the score 7-6 with 5:30 remaining in the first quarter.
Chase Hatten made two baskets sandwiched in between a made charity shot by Eythan Blair before a Eaton lay-up made the score 11-9. Ryan Kenyon tossed a trey for Bishop Garrigan but that was answered by a hoop from Elliott Hagebock for the home team.
T. J. Schnurr converted a pair of foul shots to end the first quarter as the black-and-gold led 16-11. Cade Winkel and Eaton traded baskets to open the second period before Schnurr made a free throw and a Hagebock hoop made it 19-15 halfway through the second stanza.
