Golden Bears beat West Fork to reach title game
DES MOINES—Bishop Garrigan held West Fork scoreless the first 5:33 of the fourth quarter to blow open an eight-point game and advance to the Class 1A state championship game with a 66-52 victory on Wednesday, March 11, inside the Wells Fargo Arena.
The black-and-gold had a 13-0 run during that time period to increase a 49-41 lead into a 62-41 advantage and then sank four straight free throws in the final minute advance to the state basketball finals for the first time in the school’s history.
“It is an honor to play for a state championship,” said Golden Bears head coach Mark Meister. “It is really humbling, and I am so proud of the kids to get there and have a chance to win it. It has been a memorable last 10 days for the Bishop Garrigan schools at Wells Fargo Arena, and hopefully we can it finish it the right way.
“The girls put the pressure on us last week to make the finals. West Fork did some good things early to take away some options from us. I thought the kids really did a great job of adjusting to those things, and we played a solid second half. We turned up the intensity on defense too.
