Any of you who read these words know in what high regard I hold your individual rights. The freedoms our framers sought to protect – religion, speech, petition, arms, property and due process to name just a few – are incredibly important in a republic that turns over leadership as often as ours.
The flipsides to those rights are our responsibilities to one another and the ability of others to hold us accountable for our violations of the rights of others. The collision of rights, responsibilities and accountability is inevitable, and there will always be tests of our resolve to maintain these rights and liberties, particularly when we disagree.
