Shirley Maahs Wood
Shirley Mae Maahs Wood was born Dec. 10, 1933, in Buffalo Center, Iowa, to parents Ralph Ankeny and Ida Margaret Rhine. She married Eldon “Sonny” Maahs July 15, 1956; they were married 35 years until Eldon passed away Sept. 8, 1991. Shirley married Elton Wood Nov. 22, 1997; they remained living in Whittemore until her death.
Shirley attended country school in southern Iowa, completed sixth grade in San Diego, Calif., and then returned to Iowa with her parents. She graduated from Lakota High School. She attended secretarial school in Omaha, Neb., and then returned to the Algona area, where she worked at the Kossuth County Courthouse.
Shirley was a homemaker when her children were young and then worked as a bookkeeper at Martin’s Garage in Whittemore for 10 years and Algona Veterinary Clinic for 30 years. Shirley enjoyed flowers, gardening, crocheting and playing cards with friends. She was also an avid Iowa State Cyclones fan. Shirley cherished spending time and holidays with her family and grandchildren.
Shirley’s faith was central to her life and her family; she was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church for over 60 years, where she volunteered in many capacities and served on the church council.
On Tuesday, July 2, 2019, Shirley Maahs Wood, loving wife, mother and grandmother passed away at the Kossuth Regional Health Center, Algona. She was 85.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Elton Wood; daughter, Judy (Rich) Vratny of Ft. Dodge, Iowa; son, Jim (Marlaine) Maahs of St. Paul, Minn.; grandchildren, who she loved immensely: Amanda (Tyler) Bucy, Ashley Vratny, and Ella, Will, Max and Kate Maahs. Shirley is also survived by sibling Gloria Cruse; and Elton’s family: Greg Wood, Jeff and Deann Wood, Cindy and Dave Humke, and Joe and Valerie Wood. She was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings, Pauline Wilson, Doris Hulme, Dorothy Weaver, Homer Ankeny and Joe Ankeny.
Funeral services for Shirley were held Friday, July 5, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Whittemore. Burial was in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Whittemore. Online condolences may be left at www.oakcrestfuneralservices.com.
