A funeral mass was held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2018, at St. Michael Catholic Church, Whittemore. Visitation was held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 26, 2018 at St. Michael Parish Center.
Ellen “Jean” (Penton) Simons was born in Algona on Nov. 14, 1932, the daughter of Chester Arthur Penton and Mary Ellen Carroll Penton. Jean grew up in the St. Benedict area. She graduated from Lu Verne High School in 1950.
On Oct. 11, 1950, Jean was united in marriage to Robert Cornelius Simons. To this union eight children were born. They lived their married life in the Whittemore area. Robert died on May 18, 1972. She worked at various retail businesses in Algona, Whittemore Public Library and also worked at Cenex Convenience Store in Whittemore until her retirement.
Jean was unselfish and very dedicated to her family. She will be remembered as a kind and very involved Mom, Grandma, and Great-Grandma. She loved being surrounded by her family and spent many happy years with them in all types of activities. She also enjoyed tending her flowers and coffee with The Classy Ladies on Thursday and Saturday nights.
Jean was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Rosary Society and the Whittemore American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by her children; Pamela Simons of Iowa City, Cynthia (Stuart) Simonson of Whittemore, Terry (Judy Jensen) Simons of North Liberty, Suzanne Murphy of Algona, Sandra Hackney of Marion, Debra (Peter) Oesterle of Algonquin, Ill., Laurie (Dean) Dahlhauser of Whittemore, Lisa (Steve) Goodman of Whittemore; 18 grandchildren; one step-grandchild; 20 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; twin sister, Helen Joan Erpelding of Algona; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, Pat (Don) Ritter, Anita Degen, Virginia Wentzel and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Preceding her in death are her husband, Robert; parents; step-father; brothers, John Penton and Lyle Penton; sisters, Marie Scobba, Mildred Zittritsch, Ruth West, Murial Harris, Maxine Mulligan and several brothers and sisters-in-laws.
