Charlene Hertzke

July 23, 1929 — April 21, 2018

 

ALGONA — A funeral service for Charlene Hertzke, 88, of Algona, will be held Thursday, April 26, at 11 a.m., at First Lutheran Church in Algona. Her family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the Church on Thursday. Burial will be in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Lakota.

Charlene passed away on April 21, 2018.

 

Charlene M. (Stevens) Hertzke was born July 23, 1929, in Mason City, the daughter of Harry and Grace (Bolsinger) Stevens. She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1947, and Morningside College in 1951, with a Bachelor of Arts. She married Charles Hertzke on June 15, 1951, the first couple wed in the new St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lakota. They farmed on the family farm. Sons Steven and Mark joined the couple in 1953 and 1955.

 

After Steven and Mark were older, Charlene went back to school at Mankato State, earning a Bachelor of Science degree allowing her to teach. She taught English and was the librarian at the Thompson Community School. After retiring, she worked as a Para educator for a few years.

 

Charlene enjoyed gardening, reading, knitting, all phases of Nature, especially bird watching, swimming, and genealogy. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lakota until 2009 when she and Charles moved to Algona. She then joined First Lutheran Church. While in Lakota, Charlene served in many areas of the church, women’s organization, choir, church council, and various committees. She also was on the Lakota Library board for 12 years.

 

Charlene was a dedicated supporter of Exceptional Opportunities from the time Steven and Mark started receiving services. She devoted her live to helping Steven and Mark achieve a successful, meaningful life. She was a member of Friends of Exceptional Opportunities since its beginning, serving in various officer positions.

 

Sons Steven and Mark of Algona; and many nieces and nephews and their families survive Charlene. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband Charles on Sept. 5, 2009.
