BURT — funeral Mass for Agnes Arend, 97, of Buffalo Center formerly of Burt, was held on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2017, at 10:30 a.m., at St. John’s Catholic Church in Bancroft with the Rev. Steven J. McLoud officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Algona.
Agnes Agartha Arend was born July 13, 1920, in Ledyard, daughter of Lou and Lena (Hagedorn) Junkermeier. Agnes graduated from Ledyard High School in 1938. She was married on June 22, 1948 to Paul Arend at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ledyard.
Together Agnes and Paul farmed at Burt their entire married life until retiring in 1982. They continued to live on the farm. Agnes never wanted it said she was a hard working farm wife. In later years following the death of her husband, she moved to Buffalo Center.
Agnes loved to be with family especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She always loved to sew and made many quilts and loved to crochet and she gave away many dollies.
Agnes Arend died Saturday morning at Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center at the age of 97. She had been a resident there since March of 2015.
She is survived by three children, Paulette Almelien of Buffalo Center, Francis Arend of Burt, and Linda (Frank) Arens of Arvada, Colo.; her grandchildren, Jodi Almelien of Buffalo Center, Amy (Jamie) Hagen of Buffalo Center, Tiffany Arend of Burt, and Christian Arend of Burt; her great-grandchildren, Ryan and Allison Almelien and Sophia and Kevin Hagen, all of Buffalo Center; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Paul on October 23, 1990; her grandson, Brad Almelien; a son-in-law, Gary Almelien; a daughter-in-law, Debbie Arend; three sisters, Laura Junkermeier, Esther Kading, and Delores Owen; and four brothers, Johnny, Elmer, Marvin, and Irvin Junkermeier.
