Henderson fires a 40 at Garner for Warrior boys

GARNER—Drew Henderson shot a nine-hole total of 40 to highlight the performances of the North Union Warrior boys’ and girls’ golf teams in a Top of Iowa Conference triangular played on Monday, April 7 at the Garner Golf & Country Club.

The boys’ match was very tight with Belmond-Klemme placing first with a team score of 172 closely followed by Garner-Hayfield/Ventura with a 174 and North Union was third with a 178.

Lichter takes medalist honor at Spencer

SPENCER—Despite senior Avery Lichter winning the medalist honor, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear girls’ golf squad dropped their season opener to the Spencer Tigers on Tuesday, April 2 at the Spencer Golf & Country Club by the score of 203-227.

Lichter recorded pars on Holes No. 1, 2, 6 and 8 enroute to a seven over par total of 43 as Aubrie Rabei was the runner-up medalist with her nine-hole score of 48.

Golden Bear boys drop season opener

SPENCER—Opening the 2024 season at the Spencer Golf & Country Club, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear boys’ golf dropped a triangular meet held on Tuesday, April 2.

Spencer won the meet with a team total of 163, two less than Humboldt’s score of 165 and Bishop Garrigan finished in third place with a 182.

Trevor Cooke of Spencer was the individual meet medalist with a nine-hole score of 40 and Carson Sleiter of Humboldt earned the runner-up medalist with a score of 40.

WB-M girls drop Twin Lakes match

SIOUX RAPIDS—West Bend-Mallard dropped a Twin Lakes Conference girls’ golf quadrangular meet played on Monday, April 8 at the Little Sioux Golf & Country Club.

Pocahontas Area won the meet with a team total of 203 as Newell-Fonda was second with a 216 followed by Sioux Central with a 231 and West Bend-Mallard rounded out the field with a team score of 260.

Wolverine boys fall at Newell in league match

NEWELL—Heading on the road for a Twin Lakes Conference quadrangular golf match, the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys’ golf placed fourth on Monday, April 8.

Newell-Fonda finished in first place with a team total of 168 followed by Pocahontas Area with a 194 as Sioux Central took third with a 200 and West Bend-Mallard placed fourth with a team score of 206.

Good Samaritan chapel dedicated to Hannover

ALGONA—On Monday morning, April 8, a crowd gathered in an old office turned into a chapel and spilled out into the hallway to witness the dedication of the new chapel at the Good Samaritan home dedicated to Mary Hannover.

Pastor Mark Resner performed a blessing and dedication ceremony saying, “Let harmony and peace come to all who enter this place, let it be a place for prayer and healing.”

Hungarian consulate visits Algona’s statue

On Sunday, April 7, Algona received a visitor from the Hungarian Consulate in Chicago. Laszlo Aradvari, a Diplomat for Hungarian communities abroad traveled here to place a wreath on the statue of Louis Kossuth at the courthouse. The ribbon on the wreath says “The past is the mirror for the future.”

The gesture was to recognize and honor the 130th anniversary of Louis Kossuths death. Aradvari came here from Hungary in January of this year and is exploring Hungarian connections.

Eighth grade girls honored for STEM program

The annual STEM event, sponsored by the Algona Branch of American Association of University Women (AAUW) took place Tuesday April 2. The event annually honors eighth grade girls from Algona and Bishop Garrigan Schools. These girls, recommended by their school’s math and science teachers, receive certificates for their outstanding work in: science, technology, engineering, and/or math (STEM).

Heritage room revealed at KRHC

Those at the chamber coffee last Friday at Kossuth Regional Health Center got a tour of the Heritage Room depicting the rich history of the hospital. Years of research and teamwork went into the impressive display which features a touchscreen to scroll through by years and milestones demonstrated in the photo by Nancy Grandgenett. Grandgenett, Jordan Behounek and Carol Hesch spearheaded the endeavor.
