Variety of activities planned for Fenton’s Sweet Corn Days

FENTON—There will be a variety of events available for all ages to participate in during Fenton’s Sweet Corn Days celebration this weekend Saturday, July 29 and Sunday, July 30. The two day annual event is hosted by the Fenton Community Club.

 

Events on Saturday

Activities planned for Saturday include:

• 8  a.m.-noon: city-wide garage sales and craft vendors.

• 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.: EMS bake sale and raffle.

• 9 a.m.: kickball tournament.

It’s almost Fair time

ALGONA—The 2023 Kossuth County Fair is quickly approaching, with events beginning Saturday, July 29, and extending through Saturday, Aug. 5.

Major events this year include the return of the demolition derby at the Kossuth County Speedway, The Pork Tornadoes performing on Friday night and Junk FM performing on Saturday night.

August program in Whittemore will honor Purple Heart recipients

WHITTEMORE—The Sons of the Whittemore American Legion Post 425 will honor Purple Heart recipients on Monday, August 7, which is National Purple Heart Day.

The event will begin with a social hour at 5 p.m. at the Whittemore Legion Hall followed by an outdoor program at 6 p.m. The Sons of the Legion will provide a meal following the program. This event is open to the public.

Birth Announcements

Bennett Joel Hefty

Calvin and Sarah (McPeak) Hefty of Lu Verne announce the birth of their son, Bennett Joel, on July 14, 2023, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center. He weighed 7 pounds, 12 ounces and was 21 inches long.

Bennett is welcomed home by sibling, Harlow.

Maternal grandparents are Beverly McPeak of Renwick. Paternal grandparents are Brent and Corinna Hefty of Lu Verne.

WESLEY PUBLIC LIBRARY RECEIVES ACCREDITATION

DES MOINES—The State Library of Iowa has announced that the Wesley Public Library has met the conditions for state accreditation as outlined in “In Service to Iowa: Public Library Standards Sixth Edition.”

ADULT EDUCATION AND LITERACY FEATURED DURING JULY BOARD MEETING

 

ALGONA—The Iowa Lakes Community College Board of Trustees met last Tuesday afternoon for their regularly scheduled board meeting on the Algona campus. Jolene Rogers, executive director of community and business relations, began Tuesday’s meeting by introducing Theresa Waechter, campus supervisor, for a campus update and Algona campus staff introductions.

Strip-till field day planned for August 10 near Renwick

RENWICK—Farmers will have an opportunity to see various strip-till bars in action at a field day farm near Renwick, on Thursday, August 10.

The event begins with registration and refreshments from 9-9:30 a.m., followed by field demonstrations. The field day will be held 4.25 miles east of Renwick on County Road C26 or 150th St. (follow signs for parking).

Iowa continues to see an increasing number of acres of strip-tillage each year.

Another dry, but relatively cool week last week

DES MOINES— Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig commented this week on the Iowa Crop Progress and Condition Report released by the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service.

“Despite dry conditions, the below average temperatures over the past week provided moisture-stressed crops some relief,” Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig said.
