Billy Joe Simonson, commander in chief of The Sons of the American Legion, honored six Purple Heart recipients Monday evening, August 7 at the American Legion in Whittemore. Purple Heart Day is observed on August 7 each year and is a time for Americans to remember and honor the brave men and women who were either wounded on the battlefield or paid the ultimate sacrifice with their lives.

Kossuth Farmers Market

he time has come to transition to fall, but no one has told Mother Nature! The September heat makes it feel like summer, but we are starting to see fall crops pop up at the Kossuth County Farmers Market.

Along with plentiful tomatoes, peppers, onions and much more, we saw a few squash appear at the market last Saturday.

ALGONA—No written or verbal comments were received at the Wednesday, August 30 public hearing pertaining to the proposed Algona Municipal Utilities US Highway 18 water main improvement project.

Following the public hearing, AMU CEO John Bilsten said the board of trustees reviewed the bids and postponed action of acceptance of the bids.

ALGONA—For more than 25 years, the Algona Rotary Club’s flight breakfast has given the community a chance to fill up on pancakes and take a close-up look at airplanes. In 2022, approximately 600 people attended and 24 pilots flew their aircrafts in for the breakfast.

ALGONA—First Congregational United Church of Christ, in recognition of the International Day of Peace, will host a service of music and prayer for peace on Sunday, September 17 at 4 p.m. on the west lawn of the church, located at 315 South Moore Street, in Algona.

ALGONA— Officers conducted chapter reports and Regent Linda Erpelding led the Algona Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution meeting on August 8 at the First United Methodist Church in Algona.

Teri Miller reported from the President’s General Message that fireworks were first demonstrated in 1777 in Philadelphia accompanied by a 13 gun salute.

Poppy Day is Monday, Sept. 11. Distribution of the poppies will be by the Howard D. Omdahl VFW Auxiliary #2541 at Classic Stop and the Algona Post Office in the morning. Poppy Day recognizes soldiers who have fought and died in wars.
