Support Veterans

The 2nd Annual Support Our Veterans Ride will be held on Saturday, August 19 from 9-10:30 a.m. with registration at Otto Field Post 415 in Livermore. Motors will rev and wheels will turn at 10:45 a.m. All types of vehicles are welcome. Stops for the ride will be in Humboldt, Fort Dodge, Manson, Rutland and Bode.

Coping with terminal illness can be challenging, even for those people with immense support systems behind them. At some point in one’s care plan, it may be recommended to transition from actively treating or trying to cure a condition to making the person more comfortable. This is when hospice steps in.

A funeral Mass for Barbara A. Menke, 82, of Bancroft, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 21, at Divine Mercy Parish – St. John’s Catholic Church in Bancroft. Burial will take place at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Bancroft. Visitation will be held 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 20, at Oakcrest Funeral Services in Bancroft. A rosary will be recited at 1 p.m. and there will be a scripture prayer service at 3:30 p.m.

Fernando Ruben Cantu

A funeral service for Ruben was held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2023, at Oakcrest Funeral Services, Algona. Visitation was held from 3 p.m. until the time of service.

Fernando Ruben Cantu was born on Feb. 26, 1948, in Crystal City, Texas; son of Francisco and Teodora (Guerrero) Cantu. He grew up in Crystal City, Texas, graduating from Crystal City High School in 1967.

Audi Crooks, a once in a lifetime player

ALGONA—I hope that at least once in the last four years, each of you had the opportunity to watch Bishop Garrigan’s post player Audi Crooks play  basketball.

If not, you missed a chance to see a once in a lifetime player, the best post player to ever play the five-on-five game in the history of the Iowa High School girls’ basketball history.

ALGONA—Ben Kern says the feeling never gets old. On Sunday, Aug. 13 at the Algona Country Club, the Algona native won the “Algona Am” for the sixth time as he rallied from a five-stroke deficit after the first 18 holes.
