Groundbreaking at fairgrounds

A groundbreaking ceremony was held for the new Iowa Hall of Fame Racing Museum building being built at The Kossuth County Fairgrounds last Friday, October 13 during the Algona Chamber coffee. Construction is set to begin this month in hopes of opening the new museum in early 2024. The current museum is in Otho.

Pavon wins bicycle

Wittkopf honored by College of Law

 

Harlan Wittkopf was honored at a banquet celebrating his 50th anniversary of receiving the Juris Doctor degree from the Iowa College of Law in 1973. The event was held in conjunction with the recent Iowa Homecoming and each of the 18 attendees gave a short talk. Herky the Hawkeye was there and congratulated Wittkopf on his international recognition as an author. Wittkopf was the first Judicial Magistrate of Kossuth County, a position he held until 1978.

Algona FFA soil judging team wins districts

MASON CITY—Ten Algona FFA members participated at the 2023 North Central District FFA Soil/Land judging competition on October 5. Overall there were 89 teams and 311 individuals who participated in the event.

Almost all of us know someone who has been touched by breast cancer. Sadly, this cancer is all too common as about 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives.

This scarecrow was designed by staff from the Kossuth Regional Health Center’s Physical Therapy Department.

Their scarecrow along with  many more scarecrows are displayed at the corner of State and Jones streets in Algona.

BGHS hosts quiz bowl tourney

Bishop Garrigan hosted their 33rd annual quiz bowl tournament on Saturday, October 14.  There were 24 teams from 11 different schools participating in the tournament.  Two Bishop Garrigan teams were among the top eight teams that made playoffs.

AHS Class of 1973 members reminisce at reunion

Members of the Algona High School Class of 1973 were together for a 50 year reunion on Saturday, September 23 at the Water’s Edge Nature Center in rural Algona. There were 51 classmates in attendance from the 123 member class. There was a special table with candles dedicated to the 16 deceased classmates.
