Harvest in full swing as summer-like temps recorded across state

DES MOINES— Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig commented on the Iowa Crop Progress and Condition Report released by the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service. The report is released weekly April through November.

Additionally, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship provides a weather summary each week during this time.

75th Band Day draws huge crowd

The weather was perfect depending on which side of the street you sat on for the 75th annual Band day Parade held last Saturday, Sept. 30.

Chairs were lining the street the night before to reserve favorite spots.

The crowd was well entertained and the bands gave it their all. Kids raced out to grab candy, beads and even stuffed animals thrown from the ABATE of Iowa float.

Tornado Alley race draws 70 participants

 

ALGONA—A group of approximately 70 runners and walkers participated in the annual Tornado Alley 5k, 10k and one-mile fun run. The race, held on September 30, kicked off activities for Algona’s Band Day Festival.

Overall winners of the 1-mile fun run were Grayson Kuecker in the boy’s division, finishing in a time of 7:28 and Kami Stoulil for the girl’s division in 8:48. The one-mile race had 15 participants, with a wide range of ages running.

Celebrate National 4-H Week

This scarecrow has done a flip over the excitement of being a part of the Kossuth County 4-H program. Kossuth County youth have been celebrating National 4-H Week this week. See details on page B12 inside today’s Kossuth County Advance.

Renee Muller honored

ALGONA—Renee Muller, head teller and customer service representative at Farmers State Bank, was the recipient of the Algona Area Chamber of Commerce Congeniality Award on Friday, September 29. The presentation was made during the Algona Area Chamber of Commerce coffee at Farmers State Bank in Algona.

BGHS donates to pantry

Students at Bishop Garrigan High School collected donations for the Kossuth County Food Pantry during the week of homecoming as one of the class competitions.

No. 3 Lions rally for 29-28 win over Algona

CLEAR LAKE—Third-ranked Clear Lake scored 16 points in the final eight minutes to rally for a 29-28 Class 3A district football win over the Algona Bulldogs on Friday, Sept. 29.

Derek Erpelding caught an 11-yard pass with 1:24 to play in the game to get the home team within one point at 28-27 before Titan Schmitt barely crossed the goal line on the two-point conversion for the victory.

70 years in the American Legion

“Sweet” William Clegg was honored by the American Legion for being a 70 year continuous member. Clegg’s father was a member and encouraged him to join as soon as he was eligible.

Honor Flight flies five from Kossuth

Five Veterans from Kossuth County flew on the Brushy Creek Honor Flight on Sept. 13. Pausing for a photo are: Rod Montang, Dean Benschoter, Andy Kuper, Duane Brinks and Larry Hudson. They flew out of Fort Dodge at 6:30 a.m. and arrived in Washington D.C. at 10 a.m. eastern time. While there they toured the Lincoln, Korean, Vietnam, WWII, Iwo Jima, and Air Force monuments as well as Arlington National Cemetery.
