Betty Kathryn (Stoffel) Long passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, July 22, 2018, in Algona.
Betty was born in Bancroft on March 7, 1925, where her family farmed. By her own recollection, Betty was six years old when her family moved to a farm North of Algona. It was in this farming community that Betty met Edward Long who lived just down the road from her family.
Betty married Edward Long on May 6, 1947, at St. Cecelia’s Catholic Church in Algona. Together Ed and Betty farmed and raised their family north of Algona near Plum Creek.
To this union they were blessed with seven children. Above all else, Betty was happiest being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Next to her faith, family was the most important thing in her life. Betty believed in God, hard work and love. She poured her heart and soul into everything from gardening to putting food on the table and sewing clothes for their constantly growing family.
Over her lifetime, Betty was heavily involved in her faith community at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Algona. Betty was a devoted parishioner and was a women’s circle member and involved in the perpetual adoration chapel for approximately 30 plus, since its inception.
After her youngest children got older, Betty began working outside the home. Betty worked for Bomgaars Department Store for five years, Good Samaritan Nursing Home for two years, and worked in the kitchen at Bishop Garrigan High School for four years.
Betty is survived by her seven children, Dennis of Bennett, Colo., Donald and Sandy Long of Whittemore, Kay Long of Mason City, Mark and Susie Long of Cresbard, S.D., June and Terry Haxton of Grafton, Rich and Tina Long of Grimes, and Laurie Long of Algona. Betty was especially proud of having 22 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband Ed, her parents Emil and Bertha (Budde) Stoffel, and siblings Gertrude Grandgenett, Eldon Stoffel, Tony Stoffel, Magdalen Ulfers, Le Roy Stoffel, Ida Besch, and Mike Stoffel.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to her caregivers at the Algona Manor where she was a resident for 5 ½ years, Hospice of the Heartland, for devoted friends and fellow prayer group members.
Oakcrest Funeral Services of Algona was in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be left at www.oakcrestfuneralservices.com.
