Eldon L. Hovey, 91, of Waterloo, died Sunday, June 17, 2018, at Friendship Village.
He was born Sept. 25, 1926, in Algona, son of Lionel E. and Vivian Eastman Hovey. He married Dolores Mae Kinsey on May 14, 1950, in Blue Earth, Minn. She died Aug. 20, 2017.
Eldon graduated from Algona High in 1944. After graduation, he joined the United States Coast Guard as a Merchant Marine where he stayed until the end of WWII. After his service, Eldon worked as a jobber; gaining employment with The Harnack Company in 1972. He remained there until his retirement in 1992. Eldon was a member of the Cedar Falls Amvets Post 49, Waterloo Lodge 105 AF &AM, Black Hawk Lodge #65 AF & AM and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Survived by: three sons, Theodore P. (Andrea) Hovey of Rapid City, S.D., Robert J. (Karen) Hovey of Rapid City, S.D., and William R. Hovey of Urbandale; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marilyn Greethurst of Reiles Acres, N.D., and Beverly (Gordon) Hauck of Fulton, Mo.
Preceded in death by: his wife and a brother, David Hovey.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 21, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, both in Waterloo. The Cedar Falls Amvets Post 49 and the United States Coast Guard Honor Guard will conduct full military rites. Public visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway where there will be a 4 p.m. Rosary and a 7 p.m. Masonic Service. Visitation will continue for one hour before services on Thursday at the Church.
