Donald C. Behnkendorf was born March 26, 1924. He was the son of Ernest and Bertha (Goetsch) Behnkendorf. He grew up on a farm near Bancroft. Don attended country school. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II.
Don was married to Arlene Meyer on June 19, 1949, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Burt. They raised their family in Bancroft. Don was a truck driver his entire life; and was still behind the wheel well into his 80’s. Don was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Burt and the Bancroft American Legion.
Don died Sunday, May 27, 2018, at Accura Healthcare Center in Bancroft. He was 94. He had been a resident there since June 2016.
Don is survived by three children, Larry Behnkendorf of Bancroft, Jerry Behnkendorf and wife Dorine of Algona, and Peggy Hardisty and husband Ken of Hampton, Va.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Vera Barkley of Portland, Ore. and Marie Glawe of Northrup, Minn.
His wife Arlene, parents, brother-in-law Ken Barkley, and nephew Mike Barkley preceded him in death.
A funeral service was held for Don on Saturday, June 2, 2018, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Burt. Burial was in Lu Verne Cemetery in Lu Verne, with military honors conducted.
