Berniece Irene Looft was born Aug. 3, 1939, at home in rural East Chain, Minn., the daughter of Noble and Irene (Reed) Overfield. She attended school at East Chain, Minn., until her family bought and relocated to a farm near Scarville. This is where Berniece grew up. She was a member of the Scarville girls basketball team, a sport she loved. She graduated from Scarville High School in 1957, then worked at the local grocery store.
 
Berniece married ,John Looft on March 15, 1958 at the North Prairie Lutheran Church, in rural Scarville, where she was also baptized and confirmed. Together John and Berniece moved to a farm outside of Ledyard where they raised their two children, Deb and Duane. Berniece was a hard worker. She enjoyed working on the farm side by side with her husband John. She was also willing to lend a hand to anyone who needed it, always putting others first. Berniece was a long-time member of the local Modernette Book Club and reading was her favorite pastime. She liked card club, sewing, knitting, making afghans, baking, and cooking. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Every Christmas she would bake each grandchild a coffee can full of their own special kind of cookie.
 
Berniece died April 23, 2018, at Mercy Medical Center, Mason City at the age of 78.
 
Berniece is survived by her husband of 60 years, John of Ledyard; daughter, Deb (Paul) Veit of Spencer; son, Duane (Carol) Looft of Ledyard; grandchildren, John (Heidi) Looft, Tara (Travis) Whitacre, Jaimes (Krista) Looft, Brad (Amanda) Veit, Mandy Veit and significant other Josh Kruse; great-grandkids, Jacob Looft, Luke Looft, and Jackson Veit; step-grandchildren, Mandy (Jason) Farrow, and Keith Coady; step-great grandkids, Calvin and Lilah Farrow; sister Arlys Ashton of Rochester, Minn.; sister-in-law, Gretchen (Chuck) Moen of Phoenix, Ariz.; nephews, Rob (Denice) Moen, David (Gretchen) Moen; niece, Sandy Bisbee; great niece Meghan Moen.
 
She was preceded in death by her parents, Noble and Irene Overfield; brother, Gene (Lois) Overfield; parents-in-law, Albert and Mildred Looft. 
 
Funeral services were held on Friday, April 27, 2018, at the Bethany Evangelical & Reformed Church in Ledyard. Burial was in Highland Home Cemetery in Ledyard. Online condolences may be left at www.oakcrestfuneralservices.com.
