State-champs Orioles fly past BGHS

Lead Summary

Springville has made an appearance in the Class 1A girls’ basketball title game the past three years and on Wednesday, Feb. 28, it showed the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears and the rest of the field it intended to make it four in a 54-36 victory over the black-and-gold.
The opening round of the state tournament was played at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. The Golden Bears had tough first half shooting the basketball, making just 4-of-28 shots from the field.
“I would like to say it was the nerves but I think it was more of what they had to do with it,” said Golden Bears head coach Brandon Schwab. “I really thought we had a lot of good looks in the first half but none of them would fall. I am not upset with the outcome, just upset there are eight kids that I do not get to see at practice anymore.
“Springville’s defense is the best I have ever seen and they made everything tough on us. You cannot stimulate in practice how good their zone is; they are so long. They stepped it up in the second quarter as they got some big shots from their role players. It is hard to take anything away from them because they have more than one punch.
