Devine wins district title, headed to state

Lead Summary

All year long, Carson Devine has battled some back issues and then got the flu for a week and missed the North Central Conference wrestling tournament.
But the Algona junior put all that in the past by winning a pair of matches to take the district title at 170 pounds and advance to the Class 2A state wrestling tournament this week in Des Moines.
Two teammates placed third in the district meet held in Webster City on Saturday, Feb. 10 while four more wrestlers ended the day in fourth place as the Bulldogs finished in sixth place in the team race with 38 points.
Devine opened the day with a fall over Gerald Gute of Ballard in 4:51.  Carson then pulled off the biggest upset of the day as he knocked off seventh-ranked Zane Williams 9-3 in the finals.  After a scoreless first period, Williams took the down position, escaped quickly and followed that with a takedown for an early 3-0 lead.
