BGHS remains undefeated

Bishop Garrigan remained undefeated on the year and still unscored on in district play with a 40-0 shutout victory over the South O’Brien Wolverines in a game played at Conway Field on Friday, Sept. 30.
The black-and-gold scored in every quarter in the win while the Golden Bears limited the black-and-white to total offense on the evening of 89 yards in the contest.
Joel Vaske started the scoring for the home team as lanky senior wide receiver hauled in a 48-yard touchdown pass from Brad Capesius.  The conversion kick failed but Bishop Garrigan led 6-0 with 2:28 left in the game’s first 12 minutes.
In the second quarter, Gibson Behr broke loose for a 47-yard touchdown run at the 9:23 mark of the stanza and Grant Buscherfeld bulldozed his way for the successful conversion run to make the score 14-0.
Later in the period, Behr returned a punt 58 yards for a score.  The conversion failed as the black-and-gold increased the advantage to 20-0 with 4:42 left in the first half and that was also the score at intermission.
Capesius broke loose for a 28-yard score in the third quarter and then hit Vaske with the two-point conversion as the lead went to 28-0 with 5:32 left in the stanza.
About three minutes later, Behr sprinted 68 yards for a touchdown as Golden Bear advantage ballooned to 34-0 with 2:55 still remaining in the third quarter.  The final score of the evening came with 6:34 left in the contest when Max Patkins went one yard for a score.
Behr topped the Bishop Garrigan rushing charts with 128 yards in nine trips as Patkins rushed for 82 yards in six carries and Capesius added 33 yards in just three carries.
Capesius completed 6-of-11 passes for 83 yards with one touchdown and pair of interceptions.  Vaske was his favorite target with four catches for 58 yards while teammate Chase Hatten snared one aerial for 19 yards and Behr caught one pass for six yards.
Chase Winkel led the black-and-gold defense with 15 tackles followed by Drake Buscherfeld with nine; Zach Muller had eight stops along with seven tackles each from Nick Mergen and Grant Buscherfeld.
Vaske came up with an interception while teammates Grant Arndorfer and Mergen both recorded a quarterback sack as the Golden Bears improved to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the league.
