April euchre results in Algona

ALGONA—Euchre results for April 11 in Algona were tied for first, Bimbo Bell and Charlie Kollasch with 85, second - Bruce Keith and Eddie Rahe with 69, third tie - Virginia Bode and Millie Fox, and Joe and Kay Courtney with 67, and three way tie loners - Bimbo Bell, Charlie Kollasch and Bruce Keith with four. Door prize winner was Corey Barton.

AMU public hearing will be held on April 26

ALGONA—A public hearing will be held on April 26 at 11 a.m. at the Algona Municipal Utilities office to review an application for a State Revolving Fund (SRF) loan and to make available to the public the contents of an environmental information document and the AMU project plan and ratify publication of notice.

Season tickets available for Kossuth County Concert Series

KOSSUTH COUNTY—Season tickets for the 2023-2024 Kossuth County Concert Series are available for purchase now through April 27. The season tickets are transferrable and include seven events in Algona in addition to events in Clear Lake and Osage for a total of 12 shows. All concerts are held at the Wilcox Performing Arts Center in Algona.

Registration open for Divine Mercy St. Michael’s 5K Run/Walk, May 27

WHITTEMORE—Divine Mercy St. Michael’s in Whittemore will host its 8th Annual Spirit 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, May 27. Registration begins at 8 a.m. outside the parish center with the event starting at 9 a.m. This event is open to people of all ages.

The 5K run/walk will be held in conjunction with Whittemore Fun Days. This event will start the Whittemore Memorial Day weekend.

Sawyer John Langerman

Connor and Miranda (Altman) Langerman announce the birth of their son, Sawyer John, on April 6, 2023, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center. He weighed 8 pounds, 3 ounces and was 20 3/4 inches long.

Sawyer is welcomed home by a brother, Noah, and a sister, Eleanor.

Maternal grandparents are Tim and Barbara Altman. Paternal grandparents are Jim and Stacie Langerman.

Joint investigation

ALGONA—On April 12, 2023, the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office, Algona Police Department and Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at 523 S. Jones Street in Algona. Officers seized numerous items known to be associated with illegal drug use, such as drug paraphernalia, cash and methamphetamine.

As a result of the search warrant, Richard Eugene Folkerts, age 33 of Algona, was arrested and charged with:

420 Enforcement If You Feel Different, You Drive Different

DES MOINES-—Marijuana laws are changing across the country. What hasn’t changed are the legalities behind impaired driving. In Iowa, recreational consumption and possession of cannabis is illegal. On April 20, also known as ‘420’, there may be an increase in cannabis consumption. To help keep drug-impaired drivers off the road, the Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau is partnering with law enforcement to remind drivers; drug-impaired driving is dangerous and illegal.

Kossuth County Audit Report

Gardiner + Company has released an audit report on Kossuth County.

Financial Highlights:

The County's governmental revenues totaled $27,212,841 for the year ended June 30, 2022, a 3.50 percent increase from the prior year. Expenses for County operations for the year ended June 30, 2022, totaled $26,057,363 a 10.60 percent increase from the prior year.

Looking for the state’s best pork tenderloin

CLIVE—Iowans love breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches, and restaurants across the state pride themselves on serving up unique renditions of this regional staple.

The Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA) is once again asking loyal fans to vote for their favorites.

The 21st annual Iowa’s Best Breaded Pork Tenderloin Contest is underway, with online nominations accepted through June 5. The winning restaurants are announced in October.

Warm temps, snow all in one week

DES MOINES—Strong winds and warmer than normal temperatures led to drier soil conditions which allowed 5.2 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending April 16, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Sign-up available until May for CRP program

DES MOINES—The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced that agricultural producers and private landowners can sign-up for the Grassland Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) through May 26.

Among CRP enrollment opportunities, Grassland CRP is a working lands program, allowing producers and landowners to continue grazing and haying practices while conserving grasslands and promoting plant and animal biodiversity as well as healthier soil.

Emswiler, on a mission

ALGONA—Director and co-founder of Moving Veterans Forward John Emswiler is on a mission to raise money to build a new, permanent warehouse in Algona. Emswiler recently gave a presentation to the Pharmacists Mutual Foundation who gave him a donation to start his campaign.
