Fenton Library News

The glass in the front windows at the Fenton Public Library was recently replaced. According to Lori Peterson, library director, the old windows were marred and clouded from leaking gas between the panes and disintegrated seals. The windows were no longer energy efficient and were starting to develop drafts.

Wax Museum Tour

Elsie Preston gave her presentation on Leonardo DaVinci as she loves art classes.

Fifth graders at North Union Elementary School under the guidance of their teacher,  Mrs. Michelle Bierstedt, presented a wax museum event in the Fenton gym on Wednesday, May 17.

The Algona Police Reserves Unit is now accepting applications for volunteer officers through the police reserve program.

Buckle Up

 

DES MOINES—The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau is urging Iowans to buckle up during the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Click It or Ticket high-visibility enforcement effort. The national seat belt campaign, which coincides with the Memorial Day holiday, is May 22 to June 4, 2023.

Happy Graduation Day

Thirty-six graduates were awarded diplomas during the 2023 Bishop Garrigan High School commencement exercises on Sunday, May 14. Family and friends packed the Friedmann Auditorium at the high school for the afternoon ceremony.

The senior class motto was: “Take pride in how far we have come. Have faith in how far we will go.”

Algona movie wins award

The movie “Silent Night in Algona” produced by Anthony Hornus about the prisoner of war camp in Algona in the 1940s won the Award of Achievement for live action entertainment at the 32nd Iowa Motion Picture Awards (IMPA) ceremony. AHS 2023 Wall of Fame inductees announced

ALGONA—The Algona High School Wall of Fame Committee announces the 2023 class of the Wall of Fame.  This year three teams and three individuals will be recognized as the newest members of the Wall during an induction ceremony on August 25 at 4:30 p.m. The ceremony will begin with a “meet and greet” in the Wilcox Performing Arts Center lobby followed by the official induction at 5 p.m.

Top Dog Award

INDEPENDENCE—Kossuth County Deputy Mark McGregor and K-9 Officer Pedro attended the DLE (Dogs for Law Enforcement) Conference in Independence for recertification and competition. All K-9s and handlers are required to recertify annually.

The K-9s are put through certification on aggression and apprehension while under the control of the officers. They certify in building searches, narcotics detection (both building and vehicles), tracking abilities, article recovery and obedience.

Small Town Scramble draws crowds to rural retailers

On April 14 and 15, many local businesses throughout Palo Alto and Kossuth Counties hosted a shop-hop style event called Small Town Scramble. Seventeen participating retailers opened their doors to shoppers and offered in-store specials and promotions. The event’s purpose was to showcase the unique offerings of rural small retailers and everything that small towns have to offer. The route went through West Bend, Whittemore, Algona, Bancroft, and Swea City.

Area students attend end of school year agriculture field trip

EMMETSBURG—The annual Educational Partners, Agriculture & Kids (EPAK) program was once again offered to area schools. More than 300 4th grade students from Palo Alto and Kossuth Counties and 5th grade students from Emmet County schools attended the agricultural themed field trip on Wednesday, May 3.

The program, designed to help students develop an understanding of the impact of agriculture on their everyday lives, was held at the Palo Alto County Fairgrounds in Emmetsburg.

New respite apartment option available at Huskamp Haven

A fully furnished respite apartment  has recently been established at The Good Samaritan Society’s Huskamp Haven, an assisted living building, in Algona. Sandy Buscher, the senior living manager at Huskamp Haven, said the apartment  was created to provide an option for caregivers when the need arises that they need temporary assistance in caring for people.
