EMS transitions to Kossuth County service July 2

KOSSUTH COUNTY—Algona Emergency Medical Services (EMS) will transition from city to county ownership on July 2 at 7 a.m. The City of Algona and Kossuth County have been working on plans for the change since last fall.

The Stinson Prairie Arts Council (SPAC) and Haggard-Twogood Trust hosted their annual summer solstice party at the Plum Creek Wineries green space last Wednesday, June 21. SPAC director Christine Louscher organized this year’s event which offered food, beverages and a relaxing evening in a natural setting. The crowd was entertained by music from Just Cause whose members include Todd Herbst-Ulmer, Mia Hegarty and Nick Liebl.

Now accepting applications for Dolores Mertz Memorial Scholarship

Iowa Lakes Community College is now accepting applications for the new Dolores Mertz Memorial Scholarship and more than 150 other scholarships. The submission deadline for priority awarding is March 1 for fall 2023.

A fundraiser to continue the effort to help students to further their education is being held Sunday, July 9, from 5 - 7 p.m. at the Farmhouse, 2106 100th Avenue, Algona.

New bench for fairgrounds

Priscilla Peck donated a bench to the Kossuth County Fairgrounds in honor of Ron Peck who served as the auctioneer at the fair for more than 50 years. Standing left to right are Scott Schultze, fair board president; Kim Meyer, fair board member; Priscilla Peck and Ben Kron, fair board member.

Prepare pets for Fourth of July festivities

 

 

Many people are eager for Independence Day celebrations in early summer. There is much to be excited about, as festivities often begin in the afternoon with barbecues and pool parties, and commence late at night after fireworks shows that light up the night sky. Still, not everyone enjoys the extra noise and busy nature of July 4th parties, particularly furry members of the family.

 

American and Canadian flag etiquette

 

The two largest nations in North America celebrate their countries’ respective birthdays during the month of July. Canada Day (formerly Dominion Day) and American Independence Day occur on July 1 and July 4 each year, respectively. These national holidays are marked by fireworks, barbecues, parades, and other boisterous festivities. They’re also notable times of the year to proudly display the national flag.

Smidt recognized as 1440 Citizen

KOSSUTH COUNTY—The Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office is honored to recognize Bill Smidt of Titonka as the June “1440 Citizen of the Month”. Smidt and his family live near Titonka and own and operate Smidt’s Automotive Repair. The nomination stated that he is always ready to go above and beyond to help someone in need and he volunteers for numerous community events.

Kossuth Farmers Market

 

W

e sure had a peachy day at the Kossuth County Farmers Market last Saturday.

The weather kept a few of our vendors away, but not “The Peach Guy!” Darwin Luedtke was there with a truckload of fresh peaches, along with other bakers and local growers.

I couldn’t resist taking a few peaches home myself, and decided it was a good day to try out a new peach cobbler recipe.

Calli Mawdsley named to spring UNL dean’s list

LINCOLN, NE—Calli Mawdsley of Algona has been named to the dean’s list at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for the spring semester of the 2022-23 academic year.

Mawdsley, a sophomore undeclared undergraduate, was named to the dean’s list for the Explore Center.

Party in the Park set for July 5

ALGONA—Jerry Behnkendorf will provide musical entertainment at Party in the Park on Wednesday, July 5 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on the Carnegie lawn in Algona.

The celebration will feature a Twist and Shout theme with a variety of old fashioned games available for all including hopscotch, jump ropes, giant twister as well as a hula hoop contest.

Karilyn Claude honored for 50 years of P.E.O. Sisterhood

DES MOINES—Karilyn Claude of Algona attended the 130th annual convention of the Iowa State Chapter P.E.O. Sisterhood on June 3 at the Marriott in Des Moines. Claude is from Chapter PC Algona and was among those receiving recognition as a 50 year member.

The convention theme was “I am P.E.O.” State President Carrie Wilkinson of Cedar Rapids presided over the meeting.
