KOSSUTH COUNTY—Harvest season can be hectic, but it is well worth taking the time to consider safety when operating grain handling equipment. Hazards abound when handling grain, such as equipment entanglement, grain entrapment and engulfment and dust explosions, among others.

Luncheon in Lakota honors Sue Kearney

Lakota Public Library’s 23rd Annual Salad/Sandwich Luncheon is set for Sunday, October 15 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.  at the Lakota Eagle Center in Lakota. It will be a free-will donation luncheon celebrating library director Sue Kearney for her 25 years of service.

Grant deadline approaching for KCCF

The deadline to submit grant applications to the Kossuth County Community Foundation’s 2023 grant cycle is 5 p.m. on Oct. 15. Technical support will be available to applicants until 5  p.m. on Oct. 13. The online grant application can be found on the community foundation’s website at www.kossuthccf.org.

There will be a Toys For Tots Drive-Thru on Saturday, October 14 from 3-5:30 p.m. at the Algona Publishing parking lot at 14 E Nebraska Street in Algona. New unwrapped toys or monetary donations will be accepted for Toys For Tots to be distributed in Kossuth County.

Last farmers market of the season is Saturday

Maybe it’s because the weather felt like July over Band Day weekend instead of the last day of September, but it’s difficult to believe that the Kossuth County Farmers Market is coming to an end for the season. Saturday, October 7 from 9 to 11 a.m. will be the final day for the market for 2023.

Harvest in full swing as summer-like temps recorded across state

DES MOINES— Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig commented on the Iowa Crop Progress and Condition Report released by the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service. The report is released weekly April through November.

Additionally, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship provides a weather summary each week during this time.

75th Band Day draws huge crowd

The weather was perfect depending on which side of the street you sat on for the 75th annual Band day Parade held last Saturday, Sept. 30.

Chairs were lining the street the night before to reserve favorite spots.

The crowd was well entertained and the bands gave it their all. Kids raced out to grab candy, beads and even stuffed animals thrown from the ABATE of Iowa float.

Tornado Alley race draws 70 participants

 

ALGONA—A group of approximately 70 runners and walkers participated in the annual Tornado Alley 5k, 10k and one-mile fun run. The race, held on September 30, kicked off activities for Algona’s Band Day Festival.

Overall winners of the 1-mile fun run were Grayson Kuecker in the boy’s division, finishing in a time of 7:28 and Kami Stoulil for the girl’s division in 8:48. The one-mile race had 15 participants, with a wide range of ages running.

Celebrate National 4-H Week

This scarecrow has done a flip over the excitement of being a part of the Kossuth County 4-H program. Kossuth County youth have been celebrating National 4-H Week this week. See details on page B12 inside today’s Kossuth County Advance.

Renee Muller honored

ALGONA—Renee Muller, head teller and customer service representative at Farmers State Bank, was the recipient of the Algona Area Chamber of Commerce Congeniality Award on Friday, September 29. The presentation was made during the Algona Area Chamber of Commerce coffee at Farmers State Bank in Algona.

BGHS donates to pantry

Students at Bishop Garrigan High School collected donations for the Kossuth County Food Pantry during the week of homecoming as one of the class competitions.
