AMS Musicians named to 2023 North Central Honor Choir

Six Algona Middle School students were accepted into ICDA District Honor Choir to be held in Mason City. Natalie Orban, Ethan Orban, Conner Bruellman, Olivia Adams, Josephine Reynolds and Rose Kitzinger. The honor choir directors this year are Abby Sheppard for the 7/8th Grade Treble Chorus and Luke Miller for the 7/8th Grade Bass Clef Chorus. Their performance will take place at NIACC on Thursday, October 26.

CHIPS off the Old Block

On Thursday, Chips made its annual donation of 25 wooden trucks for the C.A.R.E Team. Thanks to John Nordman they were able to pack them with blocks. Each truck comes with 30 blocks in the back and an additional 100 in a bag. Submitted photos

Legacy Ball set for Nov. 4, Jim Geelan chosen as 2023 Legacy Legend

ALGONA—The KRHC Foundation’s annual Legacy Ball is set for Saturday, November 4 at the Columbia Events Center in Algona featuring a wonderland themed atmosphere and menu. This year will mark the 21st annual Legacy Ball. Jim Geelan has been chosen as the honorary Legacy Legend.

Bullpup Preschool’s creation

Check out the Algona Schools’ Bullpup Preschool scarecrow at the corner of State and Jones streets in Algona. Area businesses, individuals and organizations have created scarecrows with themes at the corner.

Iowa author Ann Hanigan Kotz will visit Swea City Library, Oct. 16

SWEA CITY—Iowa author Ann Hanigan Kotz will be at the Swea City Library on Monday, October 16 beginning at 2 p.m.

Hanigan Kotz is the author of The Journey of Karoline Olsen. She incorporates her own family history as well as her western Iowa roots into her writing. Karoline and her husband Kristoffer arrive in the United States from Norway in 1884.

Ribbon cutting at KRHC medical supply store

Algona Area Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting and coffee at Kossuth Regional Health Center on Friday, October 6. The ribbon cutting was for the new home medical supply store at KRHC. Speaking to the group were KRHC CEO Dar Elbert, Jordan Behounek, public relations manager at KRHC; Jordann Becker, home medical equipment store manager; and Allie Opheim, RN, director of Senior Life Solutions.

Algona Knights of Columbus give back

Algona Knights of Columbus Council 952 presented donations to four area organizations on Wednesday evening, October 4. Grand Knight Bruce Pfeffer presented the donations which were made possible from the annual tootsie roll drives held after Mass and at the four corners of the Highway 18 and 169 intersection.

A card shower is planned to help the birthday caller Webster (Webby) Orton celebrate his 98th birthday on October 22. Cards will reach him if sent to 2007 Orton Rd., Algona, IA 50511.

IUB cancels public board meetings for 2023

DES MOINES—Due to a high volume of docket proceedings, the Iowa Utilities Board (IUB) is canceling its monthly public board meetings set for Oct. 9, Nov. 7 and Dec. 12, 2023.

The IUB has several public hearings and other contested cases pending and canceling monthly public meetings also reduces the risk of ex parte communications under Iowa law. Iowa Code 17A.17 prohibits communications with board members about contested cases pending before the IUB.

Absentee voting begins Oct. 18

DES MOINES-—Iowans who want to participate in early voting can begin casting ballots for the 2023 city-school election on Wednesday, Oct. 18. This marks the start of the absentee voting period and the first day Iowans can vote in person at their county election office. Oct. 18 is also the first day county auditors can mail absentee ballots to voters who requested them.

Exercise From the Heart “Cram the Columbia Hall

ALGONA—An Exercise from the Heart “Cram the Columbia Hall” event is set for Sunday, October 15 from 2-6 p.m. at the Columbia Events Center in Algona. The event will benefit Officer Kevin Cram’s family.

Activities will include a memorial walk ($30 per individual, $60 family) which will begin at approximately 2:30 p.m., soup supper (free-will donation), silent auction and bake sale. Music and emcee duties will be provided by Mojo Productions.

Birth

Rory Faye Phelps

Scott and Miranda Phelps of Titonka announce the birth of their daughter, Rory Faye, on October 3, 2023 at Iowa Specialty Hospital in Clarion. She weighed 7 pounds, 1 ounce.

Rory is welcomed home by a sister, Chloe Lane Phelps.

Grandparents are Doug and Laura Phelps of Titonka; Tom Combs of Nashua; and Kris Bolam of Waverly.

QPR training will be held on Nov. 4 at extension office

ALGONA—Care Connections of Northern Iowa, the Eyerly Ball Mobile Crisis Response Team and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in Kossuth County are teaming up to offer “Question. Persuade. Refer” (QPR) training to community members in Kossuth County and the surrounding area. QPR is a suicide prevention program that teaches participants three steps to help save a life from suicide.

Re-discovering Iowa’s fall treasures

Each season holds its own treasures, waiting to be re-discovered each year.

With the official arrival of fall, I am reminded how much I enjoy the season and its charm. From the crisp air and Friday night football to the colorful leaves and, of course, harvest.

FFA proceeds to help improve buildings at the fair

ALGONA—The Algona FFA Chapter began its annual fruit, cheese, and sausage fundraiser Wednesday on October 4.  Members will also be selling Skoglund Smokehouse Meats, gourmet popcorn and pickled herring. The fundraiser ends Monday on October 30.
