Reunion held on ancestral farm

Families descended from William and Anna Kueck Dodds gathered for a reunion and potluck on their 140-year-old ancestral farm on the evening of August 21. The farm, named White Pine Farm, was most recently owned by James and Helena Dodds and now is home to their daughter Julie. The farm, located northwest of Algona, was homesteaded in 1882 by William and Nancy Ward Dodds.

Fenton Quasquicentennial book available

FENTON—Fenton Quasquicentennial books are now available with all book sale proceeds going toward the quasquicentennial celebration set for July 2024. Gene Miller of Fenton is the author of the 105 page paperback book.

Miller said the book highlights events that have happened in each year of the town’s existence  and also goes back to the formation of Fenton Township which occurred in 1873.

Instrument zoo

The Fenton Public Library recently hosted an Instrument Petting Zoo where kids in the reading program could try out a variety of unusual instruments. They then made their own harmonicas and decorated rhythm shakers.

Pirate day celebrated

International Pirate Day was celebrated at the Fenton Public Library. During Pirate Week the Homeschool STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) session had a special mission: to create wind powered sail cars that could travel on land in search of buried treasure.

The kids were able to create their sail cars using materials from the new TeacherGeek STEM cart, which was obtained through a generous State of Iowa Scale-Up grant.

DES MOINES—The Iowa Tourism Office launched the latest edition of the Iowa Travel Guide packed with fall and winter travel ideas.

Pharmacists Mutual named a winner of the Iowa Top Workplaces 2023 Award

ALGONA—For the seventh consecutive year, Pharmacists Mutual Insurance Company has received a Top Workplaces 2023 honor. The list is based solely on employee feedback gathered through a third-party survey administered by employee engagement technology partner Energage LLC.

The confidential survey uniquely measures 15 culture drivers that are critical to the success of any organization including values, communication, and connection, just to name a few.

Rainfall pauses some harvesting

DES MOINES—Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig commented on the Iowa Crop Progress and Condition Report released by the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service. The report is released weekly April through November. Additionally, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship provides a weather summary each week during this time.

he feel of fall is in the air…leaves are turning, pumpkins are appearing and the morning has a certain chill to it. I can’t believe another season of farmers markets will soon come to an end.

USDA to survey chemical use, production costs

DES MOINES— Starting in October, the U.S. Department of Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will gather information about crop production practices from producers across Iowa, as part of the 2023 Agricultural Resource Management Survey (ARMS).

School and city elections coming up

 

The Kossuth County Auditor’s Office released the names of people who have filed paperwork to run for office. Elections for school boards and city officials will be held Nov. 7.

There are no contested races for the Algona and North Kossuth School Boards.

Algona has four seats up for election this year. Incumbents are Tom Nugent, Brent Owen, Andrea Vinci and Todd Louwagie.

Sign up for the Tornado Alley Run/Walk

ALGONA—Join the Algona Recreation Department for the annual Tornado Alley run! This fun race includes a 1-mile fun run, 5k run or walk and 10k run. Registrations will be accepted on the morning of the race.

Local runners and walkers are invited to participate in the annual Tornado Alley 5k, 10k and one-mile fun run, held on the morning of Algona’s Band Day Festival on Saturday, September 30.

Des Moines Register names Country Maid Inc. a winner of the Iowa top workplaces 2023 award

WEST BEND—Country Maid, Inc. has been awarded a Top Workplaces 2023 honor by Iowa Top Workplaces. Some 2,500 employers were invited to take part in the 2023 surveys; only 147 went on to make the list. Country Maid credits its place on the list to its team of employee owners and their commitment to following the company’s Pillars of Achievement.

Funds available now for trees

 

ALGONA—Funds are available through the Residential Tree Program to share the cost of purchasing new trees. Algona residents may apply to receive up to $150 per tree, with a limit of two trees per year.

Birth

Ruby Jean Dove

Matt and Shelby (Schindler) Dove of Dike, Iowa announce the birth of their daughter, Ruby Jean, on September 19, 2023, at the Allen Hospital in Waterloo.

She weighed 8 pounds, 10 ounces and was  20.5 inches long. Ruby is welcomed home by a sister, Ellory.

Maternal grandparents are Deb Schindler of Algona and the late Steve Schindler. Paternal grandparents are Byron and Laura Dove of Dike.
