Ilona Hertzke first met David Boekelman at a Luther League youth group event at her home church, St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lakota. They were high schoolers then back in the late 1950s, Ilona was from Lakota and David grew up in German Valley near Titonka.

Revolving Loan Fund programs boost businesses

 

Cultivate Family Shop and Top Dog Brewing granted revolving loans

ALGONA—Two local businesses were recently granted revolving loan funds from the City of Algona to jumpstart their retail business plans. The Cultivate Family Shop and Top Dog Brewing each received loan funds through the city, in addition to support from other local organizations.

KRHC honored with two Women’s Choice Awards

ALGONA—Kossuth Regional Health Center has been awarded the Women’s Choice Award for Best Hospital Emergency Care and Best Hospital Obstetrics Care.

Volunteer SHIIP counselors help save more than $225,000 in 2022

ALGONA—Volunteers Peg Skilling, Dave Skilling, Trish Casey, Sharon Berte and Marla Steier offered free Medicare counseling through the Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) during the open enrollment period during October, November and December. Local volunteers helped patients save a grand total of $225,722 during the open enrollment period in 2022.

The Zen Wellness Series

 

ALGONA—Jolene Krieps, DAcHM, L.AC, MSOM, MSA, owner of Everything Zen Accupuncture will be offering a free, six week session to teach people how they can feel better, promote better health and improve their life. The sessions will be at the Algona Public Library beginning on Thursdays starting in March from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. with a Q & A to follow.

Hibernation Happiness at the Algona Library

 

ALGONA—The Algona Public Library has a new program for children ages 0-5 to beat the winter doldrums. “Hibernation Happiness” will kick off with a pajama story time on Monday, February 27 from 6:30-7 p.m. Parents can pick up materials and learn about the program while kids get ready for bedtime by enjoying an un-BEAR-ably cute story with our children’s librarian.

Bryant students go above and beyond

 

ALGONA—This month, all of the students at Bryant Elementary School went above and beyond practicing the elements or RISE (Respect, Integrity, Students First, Excellence). While many students could be nominated for the Specials Student of the Month, the specials teachers decided on the following students.

AMS musicians named to 2023 North Central Honor Choir

 

ALGONA—Eight Algona Middle Schoolers under direction of vocal music instructor, Marisa Merkel were accepted into ICDA District Honor Choir to be held in Algona. This district honor choir features fifth and sixth grade students from around the area. Honor Choir director is Christina Svec. Their performance was held in the Wilcox PAC on Tuesday, February 14 at 7 p.m.
